Sleepy Teens Prone to Bad Behaviors ... - Health Nutrition and Fitness
TUESDAY, Sept. 27 (HealthDay News) ? Most teens don?t get enough sleep, putting them at greater risk for a slew of unhealthy behaviors, from physical inactivity to fighting, according to a new U.S. study.
The study findings also showed that sleep-deprived teens were more likely to seriously consider attempting suicide, the researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
For the study, the investigators analyzed the results of a 2007 national Youth Risk Behavior Survey of high school students who were polled about their sleep habits. The survey found that nearly 70 percent of the teens were not getting the National Sleep Foundation?s recommended eight or more hours of sleep on week nights.
The research also revealed that the students who said they got less than eight hours of sleep on school nights were more likely to engage in behaviors that put their health at risk, including:
- Drinking non-diet soda at least once a day.
- Being sedentary or not getting 60 minutes of physical activity on at least five of the past seven days.
- Spending three or more hours each day in front of the computer.
- Getting in at least one physical fight.
- Engaging in substance use, such as drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes or marijuana.
- Having sex.
- Feeling sad or hopeless.
- Seriously contemplating suicide.
The survey showed there was no association between lack of sleep and watching three or more hours of television daily among the teens.
?Many adolescents are not getting the recommended hours of sleep they need on school nights. Insufficient sleep is associated with participation in a number of health-risk behaviors including substance use, physical fighting and serious consideration of suicide attempt,? Lela McKnight-Eily, of the CDC?s division of adult and community health, said in an agency news release.
?Public health intervention is greatly needed, and the consideration of delayed school start times may hold promise as one effective step in a comprehensive approach to address this problem,? McKnight-Eily added.
The research was released online in advance of print publication in the journal Preventive Medicine.

You can do whatever you want. You will, however, be losing money to inflation if you only have a savings account, CDs, and fixed annuities.

Do a mix if you feel safer.
I suggest doing a T Rowe Price targeted retirement account. They manage the account based on how close you are to retirement. The closer you are, the safer the investments. You can truly ?set it and forget it?. Don?t even look at it until you retire. You can start a fund with 50/month or 1,000 lump sum.
The people who got hammered were people right at retirement still trying to get a large return, but even then, they have gotten most of that money back.
In the end, though, it?s all about what YOU feel comfortable with. If after doing some research you would still feel your heart in your gut for the rest of your life if you had your money anywhere other than a savings account . . . then just go with a savings account. Living in fear is no good, enjoy your life.
EDIT:
And to the previous guy ? bonds and mutual funds can and do lose money. For absolute safety, if she is 100% risk adverse, then savings, CDs, and fixed annuities are the only way to go.

British chef, restaurateur, and author Arthur Potts Dawson is passionate about the planet, good food, eating well, and making the most of what?s fresh, local, and seasonal.

Who influenced you to become an eco-friendly chef?
I was trained by great people who definitely inspired me, but I think it was actually when I began to open my own restaurants that I realized being economical and ecological helped save money and energy and also benefited the environment. It was by becoming a business owner that becoming green came so naturally.
For how long have you been practicing sustainability habits?
I have been practicing these methods since I opened my first restaurant in 2006. It is hard to be sustainable when you are working in someone else?s kitchen because perhaps they don?t want to take time to recycle rubbish, compost, or buy organic.

Iraq struggles to revive ailing date palm sector
BAGHDAD (AP) ? After years of wars, sanctions and drought, farmer Qais Nima Khamis says it's time to save the dates ? and bring back Iraq's long-regaled fruit palm industry, which once led the world market.
Khamis, whose family has been growing the fruit since 1880, is growing hundreds of more date trees this year, aiming to double his grove to up to 1,500 palms. The government is taking its own action to revive Iraq's lost golden age of dates, supporting farmers with loans and launching nurseries.
It's just a start, said the 40-year-old Khamis, but "Iraq is now open to all the world, the government started some steps and that has brought some hope."
During its heyday, in the 1950s and 1960s, Iraq was the world's No. 1 date producer and exporter and boasted 32 million date palms, more than any other nation in the world. At that time, Iraq produced about 1 million tons of dates annually, said Kamil Mikhlif al-Dulaimi, head of the Agriculture Ministry's Date Palm Board.
But by 2003, there were only half that number of trees and production fell to 200,000 tons. The southern province of Basra was the worst hit by the slump, with only about a quarter of the 12 million date trees it once had.
"That prompts only deep sadness," al-Dulaimai said in an interview.
It's not just an economic issue of getting a bigger slice of a date export market that nets big producers like Iran and Pakistan millions of dollars a year. Being renowned for dates is also a point of pride. Like all Muslims, Iraqis honor the date palm as a blessed plant.
It is mentioned many times in the holy book of Quran which, at one point, states that Mary gave birth to Jesus under a palm tree and she ate its fruit to ease the pain of childbirth. And the prophet Mohammed stressed the benefits of dates as a medicine for several human diseases. A date is the traditional way for Muslims around the world to break their daily sunrise to sunset fast during the holy month of Ramadan.
Now, with the worst years of violence following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion over and oil revenues bubbling on the horizon, Iraq has focused on the date industry as one of several sectors ? including oil, agriculture and infrastructure ? it wants to develop.
The government has begun supporting date farmers with soft loans to plant new orchards and subsidized fertilizers and insecticides. It established the Date Palm Board in 2005 with a mission to more than double to number of trees nationwide to 40 million by 2021.
The board has built 30 nurseries around the country to produce new varieties and it has launched programs to rehabilitate old orchards and build processing and storage facilities. It is aiming to develop tree varieties that produce fruit in two years rather than the four or five it usually takes.
The push has brought some progress. The number of trees has risen to 21 million trees, producing 420,000 tons last year, al-Dulaimi said.
"This is a major leap forward," al-Dulaimi said proudly. "We are reaping the fruits of these efforts."
Marhon Abid Falih, a date farmer south of Basra, would like to reap some of those profits. But he's not sure the government can help.
Iraq's chronic problems over the decades ? lacking of water, electricity, fuel, and storage ? have forced many farmers to abandon cultivation and find another jobs like in the army or police.
In 2002, Falih's orchard in the Abu al-Khasib area south of Basra boasted as many as 200 date palm trees. He grew fruits and vegetables in their shade, and hired dozens of workers to help him during harvest. The farm made enough money to meet all his family's daily needs.
But a year later, his farm was hit by drought and its soil grew bitter. Only about 50 trees survived.
"There is no motive to cultivate anymore," said Falih, 52.
"It's not a matter of planting new trees or taking loans," he said. "There is no a longer benefit from agriculture because of the salinity and dearth of water. All attempts are in vain."

SANTIAGO (Reuters) ? The Chilean capital Santiago experienced a widespread power blackout on Saturday but power remained on in parts of the mining heartland in northern Chile, according to Reuters witnesses.
It was not immediately clear how widespread the power outage was, how far it extended and whether any mines in central Chile were affected. Chile's power grid has been shaky since a massive earthquake early last year and critics blame under-investment in infrastructure.

Nigeria troops kidnapped Chelsea star Mikel's dad (AP)
ABUJA, Nigeria ? Authorities have confirmed that two Nigerian soldiers were involved in the kidnapping of the father of Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel.
Nigeria's military and security agencies said Thursday in a joint statement that Pvt. Jaduwa Thlama had been dismissed from the army over the Aug. 12 abduction of Michael Obi as he drove home from work in the central Nigerian city of Jos. The statement said Sgt. Victor Essien will face a "higher prosecuting authority" from the military for his role in the plot.
Kidnappers took Mikel's father to Kano, where police later freed him and arrested six suspected kidnappers. Police later said the kidnappers demanded $4 billion from the Chelsea star, at one point saying they considered the price "chicken change" for the Premier League team.

LONDON (AP) ? An alleged renegade trader accused of losing Swiss banking giant UBS about $2 billion in unauthorized trading was ordered held in prison custody Friday charged with fraud and false accounting.
Presiding magistrate Carolyn Wagstaff told 31-year-old Kweku Adoboli he would be held until another court appearance on Sept. 22.
Adoboli, who is charged with one offense of fraud by abuse of position and two offenses of false accounting, did not enter any pleas at the brief hearing at the City of London magistrates' court.
Wearing a light blue sweater and a white shirt, Adoboli smiled as a court clerk read aloud his name, and spoke only to confirm his details and his address in east London.
Prosecutors said that the alleged offenses took place between 2008 and earlier this week.
The young trader, who was arrested Thursday, has been employed by UBS on an equities desk known as Delta One and worked with exchange-traded funds ? which track different types of stocks or commodities, such as precious metals.
"He involved himself with trades which were highly dangerous for the bank," prosecutor David Levy told the court.
Adoboli was represented by law firm Kingsley Napley, who previously appeared on behalf of Nick Leeson ? the trader who brought down British bank Barings in 1995 after he made around $1.4 billion of losses in unauthorized trades.

"He remains in police custody and is due to appear at City of London Magistrates this afternoon," the police department said in a statement. It said an investigation involving financial regulator the Financial Services Authority, the Serious Fraud Office and the Crown Prosecution Service was continuing.
Law firm Kingsley Napley, which represented Nick Leeson ? the trader who brought down British bank Barings in 1995 after he made around $1.4 billion of losses in unauthorized trades ? said that it had been hired to represent Adoboli.
In Switzerland, UBS faced pressure to explain how its managers failed to catch the $2 billion loss, and how monitoring systems had been unable to flag up the alleged unauthorized trades.
Adoboli, born in Ghana, has been employed by UBS on an equities desk known as Delta One and worked with exchange-traded funds ? which track different types of stocks or commodities, such as precious metals.
Some commentators and politicians called for senior managers at UBS to take responsibility for the loss.
"Until UBS has explained in detail how such a significant loss due to unauthorized trading could happen, and how the problem will be solved, confidence will remain impaired," said Andreas Venditti, an analyst at Zuercher Kantonalbank.
The international banking industry has been trying to implement stricter controls on traders in the wake of a 2008 scandal at France's Societe Generale, when trader Jerome Kerviel gambled away euro4.9 billion ($6.7 billion), and the infamous Leeson case.
UBS stock on Friday recovered some of the losses suffered the day before. Investors took the chance to buy the shares cheaply, sending their price up 3.3 percent to 10.07 Swiss francs ($11.52) on the Zurich exchange by early afternoon. Shares had slumped 10 percent the day before, after the bank said a lone employee had caused the massive loss.

Medicare is a federally funded insurance program that was established in 1964. The following groups of people may be eligible to receive benefits:
? People who are at least 65 years old
? People under 65 who have specific disabilities

Decision to remove woman from airplane disputed (AP)
DETROIT ? An airline that reported suspicious behavior by two men aboard a flight from Denver on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks said authorities in Detroit removed them ? and a female passenger who is half Middle Eastern and claims she was later strip-searched ? without consulting the pilots or crew.
However, airport police and the Transportation Safety Administration said authorities responded after getting an in-flight alert from Frontier that three passengers were engaged in suspicious activity.
The crew on Frontier Airlines flight 623 followed security protocols on Sunday, spokesman Peter Kowalchuk said in an email Wednesday to The Associated Press.
The crew "responded to concerns expressed by passengers on their aircraft about the suspicious activity of two gentlemen . and only two gentlemen," Kowalchuk said. "After that, what happened was out of the control of the Frontier crew or anyone at Frontier Airlines, for that matter.
"When they arrived and boarded the aircraft, the authorities did not consult any member of the crew . not the pilots, not the flight attendants . before taking action and removing the two men and a third person, Ms. Hebshi."
Shoshana Hebshi told the AP that she was forced off the plane in handcuffs, strip-searched and interrogated.
But a spokesman for the Wayne County Airport Authority, which operates Detroit Metropolitan Airport, said it was notified by the crew that there were three people possibly engaged in suspicious activity.
"When law enforcement boarded the aircraft, the only way they possibly could have known which individuals to pursue would have been by the direction given to them from the flight crew," Scott Wintner told the AP Wednesday in an email.
"Our officers were not onboard, and our officers were not the individuals who identified or reported to us the potential threat," Wintner said.
TSA spokesman Jim Fotenos said that during the flight, Frontier reported that three people were involved in suspicious activity.
Hebshi described herself as half-Arab and half-Jewish with a dark complexion and believes she was targeted because of her Middle Eastern appearance. She spoke Wednesday with the American Civil Liberties Union.
"They did seem to think that my rights were violated, even in such a sticky situation," Hebshi wrote in an email. "Understandably, security issues are heightened when dealing with airplanes, regardless of what day of the year you choose to fly."
Authorities say fighter jets escorted the flight after its crew reported that two people were spending a long time in a bathroom ? the two men sitting next to Hebshi in the 12th row.
The FBI has said the three didn't know each other. One man felt ill and got up to use the restroom and another man in the same row also left his seat to go to the bathroom. The FBI said they never were inside together.
Hebshi told the AP she didn't notice how many times the men went to the bathroom.
"I really wasn't paying attention," said Hebshi, a freelance writer, editor and stay-at-home mother of twin six-year-old boys who lives in a suburb of Toledo, Ohio. "I was minding my own business ? sleeping, reading, playing on my phone."
After landing in Detroit, armed officers boarded the plane and ordered her and the men, whom she described as Indian, to get up, Hebshi said.
FBI spokeswoman Sandra Berchtold said the three passengers were questioned but not arrested before federal authorities determined there was no reason to suspect or hold them. She also said FBI agents who questioned the passengers were not involved in any strip searches.
Political and religious leaders in the U.S. "must step up efforts to address the rising level of anti-Muslim sentiment in our society and speak out forcefully against those who promote or exploit Islamophobia," Council on American-Islamic Relations spokesman Ibrahim Hooper said Wednesday in a statement.
But Kowalchuk defended the actions of the flight 623 crew.
"There was no profiling of any kind by any crew member associated with this incident other than that of unusual and suspicious behavior," he said. "It is unusual for people to spend 10 to 20 minutes in the small lavatories on our Airbus aircraft. When that happens, it raises suspicion. It did in this case, both in the minds of our guests and the flight crew."
The flight was one of two for which fighter jets were scrambled Sunday after crews reported suspicious activity on Sunday, officials said. In both cases, it involved bathroom use. In neither case did authorities find anything to substantiate the suspicions.
On Tuesday, a US Airways flight from New York to Phoenix was diverted to St. Louis after crew became concerned about the activities of three male passengers, all three of whom were Israeli citizens. Investigators determined there was no terrorism involved.
