NC Considers Making Sea Level Rise Illegal

According to North Carolina law, I am a billionaire. I have a full-time nanny for my children, I have won the Pulitzer Prize, and I get to spend the entire year taking guitar lessons from Mark Knopfler. Oh, my avatar? I haven?t got around to changing it, but by law, I now look like George Clooney. There?s also a supermodel clause, but discussing the details would be boasting.

You think I?m kidding, but listen to me: I?m from North Carolina, and that?s how we roll. We take what we want to be reality, and we just make it law. So I?m having my state senator introduce legislation writing into law all the stuff I mentioned above. This is North Carolina, state motto: ?Because that?s how I WANT it to be.?

You know, of course, about our passing May 8 of Amendment One, which has now written into our constitution anti-marriage discrimination against anyone who doesn?t fit one group?s image of marriage. It?s just as ugly as it sounds ? just as ugly as the last time we wrote such marriage discrimination into our constitution, in 1875, when instead of protecting us against the idea of same-sex couples marrying, it was protecting us against racial miscegenation ? down to the third generation, mind you. Good times!

Okay, though. These are hard days, people are crazyish, and you just have to soldier on, right? But then it turns out that North Carolina legislators are now tossing around bills that not only protect themselves from concepts that make them uncomfortable, they?re DETERMINING HOW WE MEASURE REALITY.

In a story first discussed by the NC Coastal Federation and given more play May 29 by the News & Observer of Raleigh and its sister paper the Charlotte Observer, a group of legislators from 20 coastal NC counties whose economies will be most affected by rising seas have legislated the words ?Nuh-unh!? into the NC Constitution.

Okay, cheap shot alert. Actually all they did was say science is crazy. There is virtually universal agreement among scientists that the sea will probably rise a good meter or more before the end of the century, wreaking havoc in low-lying coastal counties. So the members of the developers? ?lobbying group NC-20 say the sea will rise only 8 inches, because ? because ? well, SHUT UP, that?s because why.

That is, the meter or so of sea level rise predicted for the NC Coastal Resources Commission by a state-appointed board of scientists is extremely inconvenient for counties along the coast. So the NC-20 types have decided that we can escape sea level rise ? in North Carolina, anyhow ? by making it against the law. Or making MEASURING it against the law, anyhow.

Here?s a link to the circulated Replacement House Bill 819. The key language is in section 2, paragraph e, talking about rates of sea level rise: ?These rates shall only be determined using historical data, and these data shall be limited to the time period following the year 1900. Rates of seas-level rise may be extrapolated linearly. ?? It goes on, but there?s the core: North Carolina legislators have decided that the way to make exponential increases in sea level rise ? caused by those inconvenient feedback loops we keep hearing about from scientists ? go away is to make it against the law to extrapolate exponential; we can only extrapolate along a line predicted by previous sea level rises.

Which, yes, is exactly like saying, do not predict tomorrow?s weather based on radar images of a hurricane swirling offshore, moving west towards us with 60-mph winds and ten inches of rain. Predict the weather based on the last two weeks of fair weather with gentle breezes towards the east. Don?t use radar and barometers; use the Farmer?s Almanac and what grandpa remembers.

Things like marriage rules involve changing social mores and those who feel that certain types of marriage are wrong can be understood and even forgiven. They?re certainly on the wrong side of history, but it?s a social issue where emotion understandably holds sway over things like evidence.

But while the rising sea may engender emotion, it exists in a world of fact, of measurable evidence and predictable results, where scientists using their best methods have agreed on a reasonable ? and conservative ? estimate of a meter or more of rising seas in the coming century. In 2007 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change gave a hesitant estimate of up to 59 centimeters of rise ?but even two years later that estimate already appeared low and scientists began to expect a rise of a meter or more.

No matter in North Carolina. We?ve got resorts to build and we don?t care what the rest of the ocean does ? our sea isn?t going to rise by more than 15.6 inches. Because otherwise it?s against the law.

No information on whether the scientists on the panel, like Galileo, have stamped their feet and muttered ?And yet it rises!? But there?s no doubt that NC?s legislative inquisitors will be classified along with Galileo?s papal persecutors and their own forebears who outlawed interracial marriage, as on the wrong side of history.

But these folks will also be wet.

I?d love to write more, but I have chores to do and kids to manage. Man ? all this housework after a full day of work at my desk just doesn?t seem right. There oughtta be a law. Hey, wait a minute ?.

Tim Cook Hints At Apple iTV At D10 Conference?

Gather 'round, Apple enthusiasts. It's time for some iTV talk.

Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage on Tuesday night at AllThingsD's D10 conference in San Francisco to discuss patent wars, controversies in the company's supply chain and plans for upcoming products. One topic that interviewers Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg were particularly keen to dissect: the long-rumored but never confirmed Apple-branded HDTV set.

Cook at D10 firmly refused to mention explicitly any plans the company might have to manufacture what is already referred to as an "iTV. " He did say, however, that television is "an area of intense interest for [Apple]."

Many believe Apple has already secured or is working to secure partnerships for streaming and syndicated content that would be available on such a device. Other rumors claim a potential Apple television set will feature Siri-like voice control and may even accept touchless gesture input.

Currently, Apple offers a product called the Apple TV, a set-top box that the user connects to a separate television to watch streaming media from sites like YouTube and Netflix, as well as content purchased from iTunes. While the device hasn't enjoyed the success of the MacBook, iPhone or iPad, the Apple TV may provided clues to the company's plans for new products and strategies.

Cook noted for Mossberg and Swisher that customers bought 2.8 million Apple TV devices last year, and that Apple sold nearly as many set top boxes in the early months of 2012. According to Business Insider's Henry Blodget, this puts Apple on track to sell as many as 8 million Apple TV devices before the year is out. Comparing those figures to Apple's sales of iPhones (35.1 million), iPads (11.8 million) and Macs (4 million) during the first three months of 2012 reinforce Steve Jobs' assertion that the Apple TV is merely a "hobby" device, an assertion Jobs made at the 2007 D conference. Nevertheless, Tim Cook stressed on Tuesday night, "[Apple is] not a hobby kind of company."

"Our tendency is to do very few things," said Cook, according to a live blog provided by The Verge. "And, if something creeps in and isn't a big success, we get it out of the way and put our energies on something else. Apple TV though, you see what we've done. We've stuck in this."

The question is, why would Apple hold on to a product that would never be the runaway success that some of its larger product lines have become?

At the Goldman Sachs Technology Confernece in February, Cook spoke of the Apple TV's potential to lead Apple into greater success elsewhere: "If we kept following our intuition and kept pulling the string, we might find something that was larger."

Apple seems to have merely dipped its toes into this market and doesn't appear to be shrinking back from the relative chill. Will the company's next move be to take a running leap and pull off the cannonball it seems poised for? Will we see a major shakeup in TV hardware and content distribution? Cook's sort-of answer, per Engadget's D10 live blog:

Here's the way we'd look at that. Not just at this area, but other areas. 'Can we control the key technology? Can we make a significant contribution beyond what others have done in this area? Will this product be one that we want?' That's what we'd ask about any new product category. That's what we ask about products within families that we've already announced.

In a word: maybe.

Anything's possible, Cook teased again and again during the rest of the interview. When pressed more broadly about future products, Cook vowed that Apple will "double down on secrecy" and coyly talked around "incredible" things the company has in store. (Closest at hand is Apple's yearly Worldwide Developers Conference, which kicks off on June 11, when Apple is expected to announce new MacBooks, the next version of iOS, though most likely not the next iPhone or an HDTV.)

Check out All things D's official live blog to read more insights from Tim Cook about Apple's patent wars with rival device makers, its "tumultuous" relationship with Facebook, Steve Jobs' legacy and much, much more.

Marriage may make people happier

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? Married people may be happier in the long run than those who aren't married, according to new research by Michigan State University scientists.

Their study, online in the Journal of Research in Personality, finds that although matrimony does not make people happier than they were when they were single, it appears to protect against normal declines in happiness during adulthood.

"Our study suggests that people on average are happier than they would have been if they didn't get married," said Stevie C.Y. Yap, a researcher in MSU's Department of Psychology.

Yap, Ivana Anusic and Richard Lucas studied the data of thousands of participants in a long-running, national British survey. They set out to find whether personality helps people adapt to major life events including marriage.

The answer, essentially, was no: Personality traits such as conscientiousness or neuroticism do not help people deal with losing a job or having a baby.

"Past research has suggested that personality is important in how people react to important life events," Yap said. "But we found that there were no consistent effects of personality in how people react and adapt to these major events."

In general, similar-aged participants who did not get married showed a gradual decline in happiness as the years passed.

Those who were married, however, largely bucked this trend. It's not that marriage caused their satisfaction level to spike, Yap noted, but instead kept it, at least, stable.

The study is slated to run in the October issue of the peer-reviewed research journal.

China Drops Dollar in Direct Trade of Yuan

Slowly but surely, the reserve currency status of the United States dollar is transitioning into a lesser role, at least for China.? As early as June, the AP reports, the Yen and Yuan will begin direct trading without the use of the USD as a ?cross-currency? intermediary.? This means that the USD will no longer be involved in setting the rates between the Japanese Yen and the Chinese Yuan.

The aim here is to encourage bilateral trade and investment between China and Japan (the world?s second and third-largest economies, remember), and, some speculate, the risks involved with the USD and costs associated with extra exchange transactions.? Scholars of history will take special note for several reasons, one of which is that it is the first time China has allowed the Yuan to trade directly with any currency besides the US dollar.

Zero Hedge posted an excellent chart as a reminder that over the centuries, major reserve currencies have come and gone several times, just as empires never last ? neither does the predominant currency of global trade.? Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands and France have all been world-dominant economies at earlier points in time.? Does the average American even know what this means?

It?s a very good time to begin learning Mandarin, if you have not already.

New research published in Public Health states political context may form underlying cause

Glasgow, UK, May 29, 2012 - Life expectancy in Scotland is markedly lower compared to other European nations and the UK as a whole [1]. But what are the reasons for this higher mortality? An explanatory framework, synthesising the evidence is published this month in Public Health.

Higher mortality in Scotland is often attributed to higher rates of deprivation, smoking, alcohol consumption and poor diet. However such explanations are not sufficient to understand why Scotland is so very different compared to other areas. A group of researchers found that no single cause was likely to explain the higher mortality, but the authors assert, as a result of their research, that it may be attributable to a range of factors influenced by the political direction of past decades.

In synthesising this evidence the group of researchers identified candidate hypotheses based on a literature review and a series of research dissemination events. Each hypothesis was described and critically evaluated by a set of epidemiological criteria.

Hypotheses identified and tested included: artefactual explanations (e.g. migration); 'downstream explanations' (e.g. genetics, individual values), midstream explanations (e.g. substance misuse, family, gender relations) and; upstream explanations (e.g. climate, inequalities, de-industrialisation and 'political attack').

The results showed that between 1950 and 1980 Scotland started to diverge from elsewhere in Europe and this may be linked to higher deprivation associated with particular industrial employment patterns, housing and urban environments, particular community and family dynamics, and negative health behaviour cultures.

The authors suggest that from 1980 onwards the higher mortality can be best explained by considering the political direction taken by the government of the day, and the consequent hopelessness and community disruption that may have been experienced. Other factors, such as alcohol, smoking, unemployment, housing and inequality are all important, but require an explanation as to why Scotland was disproportionately affected.

"It is increasingly recognised that it is insufficient to try to explain health trends by simply looking at the proximal causes such as smoking or alcohol. Income inequality, welfare policy and unemployment do not occur by accident, but as a product of the politics pursued by the government of the day. In this study we looked at the 'causes of the causes' of Scotland's health problems," said Dr Gerry McCartney, lead author of the study and consultant in public health at NHS Health Scotland.

CAIRO (AP) ? The runoff vote for Egypt's next president will pit the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate against the last prime minister to serve under Hosni Mubarak, according to full official results released Monday by the election commission.

Commission chief Farouq Sultan told a news conference that the Brotherhood's Mohammed Morsi and Ahmed Shafiq, a former air force commander and a longtime friend of the ousted leader, were the top two finishers in the first round of voting held on May 23-24.

He said Morsi won 5.76 million votes, while Shafiq garnered 5.5 million. Finishing a close third was leftist candidate Hamdeen Sabahi with 4.82 million votes.

Sultan said his commission received a total of seven appeals, and rejected all of them. Four of the appeals were dismissed because they had no legal basis, while the other three were not accepted because they were submitted after the deadline, he said.

Morsi and Shafiq have been the most polarizing of the 13 candidates who contested the first round, setting the stage for a fiercely contested runoff June 16-17. Already, both men have begun reaching out to a broad spectrum of political and demographic groups who didn't support them in the first round, or nearly half of the 25 millions who voted.

About 50 of Egypt's estimated 82 million people are eligible voters.

Don't Pay Someone For Simple Repairs | ApostolicCM.com Answers

Don?t underestimate your home-improvement project. Before you get started, put all the necessary steps into a project plan. Estimate for more time than you think the project will take. Then have someone else give you a second opinion on your project plan to make sure you did not leave any steps out.

Remember when doing a massive home renovation that the inside is not the only area that needs attention. Sure the inside of the home is a big factor in a major home improvement plan, but neglecting the outside will lead to expensive repairs down the road. Look at the roof, siding, paint, and gutters for any signs they need replacing.

There are a few electrical tasks that a non-expert can do around the home. One is replacing a light switch. After you turn off the electricity and remove the cover plate, detach the wires on the old switch and replace them in the same order on the new switch.

One of the biggest causes of failure in a DIY home improvement project is to start more than one project at a time. When you focus your efforts on one area, you end up with better results and a better success rate of finishing your project. Also, you have more usable space while renovating if only one area of the home is in progress at one time.

Before beginning home improvements apply for the appropriate building permits. Any home improvement that involves plumbing, electricity, or structural changes can require a permit. Check your local laws. If you proceed without a permit then you can be fined or it could make the house harder to sell in the future.

If you don?t have enough space for a small office, you can use a small portion of your living room for that purpose. Buy a small privacy screen and place a desk behind it with a matching chair. You can purchase small shelves to install on your wall to store your pens, pencils, staplers and other important items.

When installing new kitchen cabinets, it is very important to be sure that each cabinet is screwed securely to a wall stud. Locate and mark all wall studs before beginning the installation so you know exactly where to place your screws. An inexpensive stud finder from the local hardware store, helps to make this process easy.

Whenever you are taking on a home improvement project in the bathroom or the kitchen, be sure to turn off the water first. Any time you work near water pipes, an accident can happen resulting in a leak. You want to take steps to minimize the damage so that you do not end up with a flooded room. Be sure to know where your water shutoff valves are, and turn the water off before beginning your work.

During summertime, go outside and pick some wildflowers. Place the wildflowers between the pages of an old and unwanted phonebook. Pile about 50 to 60 pounds of books on top of the phonebook to press the flowers dry. After about a week or two of pressing, adhere your flowers to a piece of cardstock and hang them in your room. They create a great focal point as well as a nature friendly approach to home decorating.

Successfully completing a home improvement project is a great way to increase your confidence while increasing your home?s value and livability. If you have little or no experience in home maintenance or no construction skills, then you will need the tips in this article to pull off your project.

Seeking the Most Effective Forex Trading Program

What exactly is Forex trading?

Currency trading is short for the foreign currency market, that is a global economic market place wherever foreign currencies are bought and sold. The foreign currency market commenced inside the 1970s and is the greatest economic industry on the planet, having an typical daily turn over involving US$1.Nine trillion. That is 30 instances the quantity of day-to-day exercise on every one of the Us all stock markets.

Every single Foreign exchange trading requires together buying one forex and also promoting another. As an example, if you think that the actual Pound may go up in accordance with the actual greenback, youll spot any Euro/Dollar buy and sell. Your foreign exchange method would after that buy the Dinar and then sell a similar amount of the Buck. Next, when you need to close your situation, youll place the Dollar/Euro industry. This would find the Greenback and then sell on your Euro. In the event the Pound got increased up against the Money, youd probably generate income, but if the idea experienced decreased in accordance with the Greenback youd probably create a decline.

This means that they are able to industry $100,Thousand obstructs, furnished his or her account includes at the very least $100,1000 x 1% = $1000. One thousand dollars will guard your specialist towards any potential loss that their client can make (foreign currency values hardly ever go up and down by simply a lot more than 1% within a morning). If your buyers accounts will be reduced simply by losses (we.e. lowering the brokers security under appropriate ranges), the particular dealer can close just about all investments and also demand an additional deposit just before more deals can be created.

Exchanging margin lets people to manage huge amounts of foreign currency wiith fairly small amounts of capital (often Fifty, A hundred or even 200 instances the quantity of funds that they have put in). A few agents will provide control associated with 2 hundred:A single and even 500:1, allowing you to commence with as few as $500 or perhaps $250 with your bank account.

Nonetheless, remember to remember that despite the fact that better influence allows you to get the maximum profit potential, additionally, it raises the danger aspect. The larger the influence rate, smaller investing change that is to be forced to eliminate the trading funds. So pick the level of power that you use wisely.
For brand new dealers, it could be safer to start with control of Twenty:One or 55:One particular. Ex-Mubarak PM praises 'glorious' Egyptian uprising

CAIRO (AP) ? The two surviving candidates in Egypt's presidential election appealed Saturday for support from voters who rejected them as polarizing extremists in the first round even as they faced a new challenge from the third runner-up who contested the preliminary results.

Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister Ahmed Shafiq vowed he won't revive the old authoritarian regime as he sought to cast off his image as an anti-revolution figure, while the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate Mohammed Morsi reached out to those fearful of hardline Islamic rule and the rise of a religious state.

Many votes are up for grab, but the two candidates will have a tough battle wooing the middle ground voters amid calls from activists for a boycott of the divisive vote.

Adding to the uncertainty, Hamdeen Sabahi called for a partial vote recount, citing violations that he claimed could change the outcome, a prospect that may further enflame an already explosive race. Sabahi, a socialist and a champion of the poor, came in third by a margin of some 700,000 votes, leaving him out of the next round to be held on June 16-17.

Many Egyptians were dismayed by the early results, which opened a contest that looked like a throwback to Mubarak's era ? a rivalry between a military-rooted strongman promising a firm hand to ensure stability and Islamists who were repressed under the old regime but have become the most powerful political force in post-revolutionary Egypt.

Each candidate has die-hard supporters but is also loathed by significant sectors of the population.

The first round race was tight. Preliminary counts Friday from stations around the country reported by the state news agency gave Morsi 25.3 percent and Shafiq 24.9 percent with less than 100,000 votes difference. The election commission said about 50 percent of more than 50 million eligible voters turned out for the first round, which had 13 contenders.

A large chunk of the vote ? more than 40 percent ? went to candidates who were seen as more in the spirit of the uprising that toppled Mubarak, that is neither from the Brotherhood nor from the so-called "feloul," or "remnants" of the old autocratic regime.

Sabahi came in third with a surprisingly strong showing of 21.5 percent, followed by Abolfotoh, a moderate Islamist who broke with the Brotherhood.

Steven Cook, an Egypt expert with the Council on Foreign Relations, a U.S. think tank, said the outcome of the battles between the two extremes is hard to predict.

"Egypt is following the classic pattern of revolutions. People who made them get frozen out," he said.

He said Shafiq will rely on the same "dynamics" of fanning fears of the Islamists that Mubarak relied on in the past. On the other hand, the Brotherhood will play on the fear of Shafiq's recreating the old regime.

Shafiq, the last prime minister to serve under Mubarak, spent much of his campaign for the first round criticizing the revolution that ousted his former boss. But on Saturday, he vowed there would be no "recreation of the old regime.

"I am fed up with being labeled 'old regime,'" Shafiq said at a news conference in his campaign headquarters in CAiro. "When pressed on the issue, he said: "All Egyptians are part of the old regime."

A former air force commander and a personal friend of Mubarak's, Shafiq was booted out of office by a wave of street protests shortly after Mubarak stepped down on Feb. 11, 2011.

The 15 months since Mubarak's ouster have seen a surge in crime, a faltering economy and seemingly endless street protests, work stoppages and sit-ins. The disorder has fed disenchantment with the revolutionary groups, and played to Shafiq's advantage as he portrayed himself as the candidate best placed to provide security.

But Shafiq is also associated with Egypt's military leadership, which has been heavily criticized as mismanaging the transitional period and failing to reform corrupt institutions or to provide stability. They also have been widely blamed for the deaths of more than 100 protesters, the torture of detainees and holding military tribunals for at least 12,000 civilians.

"Egypt has changed and there will be no turning back the clock," said Shafiq, 70. "We have had a glorious revolution. I pay tribute to this glorious revolution and pledge to be faithful to its call for justice and freedom."

Shafiq also tried to enlist the support of youth groups, singling out the large associations of soccer fans known as "ultras" and April 6, both of which played a key role in the uprising.

"Your revolution has been hijacked," he said twice, "I pledge to bring its fruits between your hands."

His outreach was swiftly rejected by the revolutionary group April 6, with spokesman Ahmed Maher telling reporters that his group will never talk to the former prime minister, whom it considers as a pillar of the Mubarak regime.

Shafiq also held out the possibility of naming Sabahi as a deputy if elected president ? an apparent bid to draw supporters of the third-place finisher to his side.

Sabahi later said he was not ready to accept the results that have been released by regional commissions. The Central Election Commission planned to release official results in the coming few days and those can't be contested.

"We are waiting for official results. We will manage to contest in the runoff and succeed in fulfilling what we started," Sabahi told a crowd of about 3,000 people outside his headquarters in Giza. Some broke out in tears.

Sabahi's campaign manager Hossam Mounis said they had received video clips filmed by supporters showing violations, and complaints had been filed across the country to judges overseeing polling centers.

Hafez Abou Saada, a veteran rights activist and an election observer, said violations such as vote buying and busing in voters were limited but there were more significant problems in the process of tallying votes at regional counting centers. He said the violations were not sufficient to force a new vote but could be cause for a recount.

"The differences are very tight and the aggregation of votes can be difficult," he said.

Observers were largely not allowed to attend that process, but candidate deputies were present.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter also said Saturday that his center was restricted in its monitoring mission, but the process was generally acceptable and violations won't affect the runoffs.

"I don't think the mistakes and errors and improprieties that we have witnessed in the last few days will have a negative impact on the runoff," he told reporters.

Meanwhile, Morsi called for a meeting of Saturday to enlist the support of the candidates booted out of the race in its battle against Shafiq. Three candidates, including Sabahi, turned down the invitations.

The longtime fundamentalist group which won close to 50 percent of parliament seats after the country's first parliamentary elections in post-Mubarak era, has lost a great deal of its credibility across the country's political spectrum, and needs to bridge the chasm with the rest of secular and liberal parties and youth movements.

Liberals accuse the group of hunger for power especially during the critical process of constitution writing in March. Islamist-led parliament packed the 100-member panel tasked to with the country's new constitution, with their supporters, sparking liberals' anger and fear that fundamentalists will try to put limitations on civil freedoms and heavily infuse it with Islamic Sharia laws.

A court ruling ordered dissolving the panel.

On Saturday, the parliament held a heated session discussing new regulations for panel formation. Several lawmakers withdrew from the session protesting lack of specific mention to the mechanism of voting.

Hundreds gather for parade to celebrate Memorial Day

CELEBRATE: Attendees applaud participants of the annual parade that took place Saturday on Laurens Street. Hundreds gathered to honor the U.S. military. Staff photo by Chris Walsh.

Hundreds of patriotic local residents lined the downtown streets of Aiken to watch this year's Memorial Day parade make its way down Laurens Street.

American flags waved as far as the eye could see as families turned out to honor military members past and present. Even U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham yelled out, "This is the best parade in South Carolina" while he made his way down the route sitting atop a convertible.

Marching bands belted out the tunes of American lore as those in attendance clapped and saluted passersby.

"It was hot," said Jaibria Quattlebaum, who was in the parade as a part of the Aiken High School color guard.

"But it was fun," chimed in fellow color guard member Mariel Urizar, who was also sitting with Leanne Summers and Mercedes Winters at the ice cream social that followed the parade.

It wasn't just locals taking in the Memorial Day festivities either. Keri Truhe brought her family down from North Carolina to see her mother, Barb Rollins, in the parade on the AAA Home School Band float.

"Fabulous," Truhe said, sitting in the shade with her children Tori, David and Monica.

The parade was held by the James L. Hammons Marine Corps League Detachment 939 and featured more than 70 participating groups. The grand marshal was U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Perry M. Smith.
