Dallas stuns loaded Lakers in opener, 99-91

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Dwight Howard missed a two-handed dunk on his first shot, and the night never got much better for the Los Angeles Lakers.

When Howard and Steve Nash took their places alongside Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol under the Hollywood spotlight, the Lakers opened a season of enormous expectations with an equally big dud of a performance.

Darren Collison scored 17 points, Brandan Wright added 14, and the Dallas Mavericks spoiled the Lakers debuts of Howard and Steve Nash with a 99-91 victory over Los Angeles on Tuesday night.

In his first regular-season game in a gold jersey, Howard had 19 points and 10 rebounds while missing 11 of his 14 free throws before fouling out with 2:02 to play.

That's hardly the debut he anticipated after arriving in a trade with Orlando last August, but not much has gone according to plan in the first month for the Lakers' starters, who barely played together in their winless preseason due to injuries.

"It's not an excuse, but it will all come with time," Howard said. "We haven't had an opportunity to really play together as much as we want, but we're going to get it. ... We're going to chip away, and we're going to get better."

The Lakers' superstar newcomers both had debuts to forget. Nash managed just seven points and four assists while trying to balance the Lakers' new motion offense with his own strengths on the pick-and-roll ? all while getting roundly outplayed by Mavs newcomer Collison.

"It's growing pains, and it's a struggle," Nash said. "We're out of sync, and we're going to probably have some more moments in games like that."

O.J. Mayo had 12 points as the Mavericks pulled off a stunner in their opener, comfortably beating the Lakers without any help from injured Dirk Nowitzki. Dallas and Los Angeles both made big moves in the offseason, yet the Mavericks appeared to be much more together than their high-profile rivals.

"It's a great win," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "If you execute in this league and have talent, you have a chance to win, and we did that. The Lakers are going to be fine. They've got a lot of new guys and a new system, but we were opportunistic tonight and got the job done."

Bryant scored 22 points while playing on an injured right foot for the Lakers, whose loaded lineup followed up its 0-8 preseason with a largely passionless second-half effort in front of a sellout crowd expecting to see a super team capable of contending for the franchise's 17th championship ? a fact acknowledged by Bryant when he addressed the fans before the game.

"As you know, we have a lot of expectations this season," Bryant said. "We're trying to live up to the expectations. We're trying to bring another championship back to where it belongs, back to Los Angeles."

Instead, the Lakers showed how much work they will have to do to challenge Miami and the NBA's best.

Dallas steadily pulled away to a 16-point lead in the second half, never allowing any serious runs by their disjointed, disorganized opponents as the Lakers lost their opener for just the fourth time in the last 21 years.

"It's not the way we wanted it to go," said Gasol, who led the Lakers with 23 points and 13 rebounds. "We know it's not going to happen for us right away, but we've just got to stick with it."

Vince Carter, Shawn Marion and Rodrigue Beaubois scored 11 points apiece for the Mavericks, who snapped a six-game skid against the Lakers over the past two seasons.

Dallas also contained Howard by using his career-long free-throw ineptitude against him ? hardly a novel strategy, but one that worked particularly well when combined with Howard's opening-night nerves.

"When he had me in a bad position, I wanted to foul him," said Elton Brand, who had eight points and 11 rebounds in his Dallas debut. "Underneath the basket, he's a beast and he's hard to stop. I know he can dunk, and I know he can make those tough layups, so I'm playing the percentages. He obviously hasn't been a good free throw shooter, and tonight he was 3 for 14."

The Lakers were 12 for 31 altogether from the free-throw line, a major factor in their inability to close the gap on Dallas in the second half.

"I've just got to stop thinking so much and get up there and make them," Howard said.

Jae Crowder scored eight points in his NBA debut for the Mavericks, who are likely to be without Nowitzki for at least six more weeks while the German superstar recovers from arthroscopic knee surgery. Dallas also played without new center Chris Kaman, yet had little trouble containing the Lakers down low.

NOTES: Dallas opened its season on the road for the first time since 2007. The Mavericks had opened the season against the Lakers three previous times, losing all three games. ... Howard was called for a flagrant foul in the third quarter for hammering Brand on an open shot in the lane. ... Katy Perry, Russell Brand, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Adam Levine, Jon Cryer and Los Angeles Galaxy stars David Beckham and Robbie Keane attended the game.

Google: No, AdWords Customers Don't Get Special Organic ...

A common newbie myth and a belief many of my anti-Google readers feel, is that Google will treat AdWords customers better in the organic rankings. One person asked if these big spender AdWords customers get special treatment by being able to ask for favors from AdWords representatives for organic ranking purposes.

The question that was asked:

I am an important AdWords customer and recently I have seen a drop in ranking for my site. Why can?t I get advice on optimizing my site for Google?s search results through my AdWords point of contact?

?

Matt Cutts, Google?s spam blocker, answered it in a video:

Here is the automated transcript from YouTube:

Hurricane Sandy Propels YouTube, Red Cross, And Flashlight Apps To Top Spots In App Store

photo_001Hurricane Sandy has clearly taken its toll on the East Coast. At least 7.4 million homes and businesses are without power this morning across seven states. Public transit has been shut down in New York City, along with the Nasdaq and NYSE. Frankenstorm has truly been unprecedented, and so, unprecedented changes are to follow in the tech world. For example, the top three apps in the Apple App Store at this very moment are YouTube, Hurricane by American Red Cross, and Flashlight by iHandy inc.

Navy commander sent home amid investigation

By Lea Sutton, NBCSanDiego.com

SAN DIEGO -- A local Navy commander is returning to his home port in Washington state midway through his deployment following an investigation into undisclosed allegations of inappropriate judgment, Navy officials confirmed.

The commander in question is Rear Adm. Charles Gaouette, commander of the San Diego-based USS Mobile Bay and two North Island-based helicopter squadrons that are deployed with the Stennis Strike Group.

The Stennis Strike Group entered the Middle East area of operations less than 10 days ago, but is now left without commanding officer Gauette.

Navy officials said the admiral is being sent home to Bremerton, Wash., pending an investigation, but officials are not saying exactly what the investigation or allegations entail.

However, the Navy said Gaouette is not being formally relieved of command.

Retired Navy Capt. Neal Zerbe ? who served for more than 20 years ? told NBC 7 that this type of move by the Navy is highly unusual.

?The particular commander being relieved, and you know translating that to just moving him back to a continental U.S. base while the investigation continues, is unlike anything I've ever seen before,? said Zerbe.

It's unusual for the Navy to replace a Strike Group Commander mid-deployment and Zerbe said it?s important to note how the Navy?s statement about Gaouette is worded.

"If there are improprieties or if there are bad errors in judgment for something that happened in an operational situation -- you usually see wording to that effect," added Zerbe.

More from NBCSanDiego.com: 5K Honors Slain SDPD Officer

?The Stennis Strike Group deployed in late August and made two port visits on its way to the Middle East. Zerbe said that leadership is important, but he has full confidence the Strike Group will carry out its mission ? no matter what.

"This is at a very senior level. The guys that are delivering the bombs on target and supporting the guys in the field in contact, they're ready to go. They've got no issues; it's transparent at their level," he said.

An admiral who commanded the Abraham Lincoln Strike Group will assume command until the matter regarding Gaouette is resolved. Gaouette's chief of staff will be leading the Strike Group until his arrival.

The Benefits Of College Soccer Training | recreation and sports blog ...

A great way to fund study is with funding available through college soccer training. There are numerous aspects of the game that will be worked on while funding studies. Players learn to improve their game while discover the benefits of teamwork.

Combining funding for studies and top notch sports training means USA soccer scholarships are an outstanding opportunity. It's a win-win scenario for those who either become sporting successes and those who learn from the experience and complete their studies without accumulating huge debts.

Through the college soccer camp different aspects will be improved. Defensive skills are probably the most critical area of development, they are frequently not taken seriously enough by attacking players, yet there are benefits for players all over the pitch. Passing accuracy and ball control are obvious skills however goalkeepers also need to work on them. Goalkeepers play a very different game so need specialist coaches, outfield player training may seem irrelevant but help the player develop their overall skills.

It's a great opportunity for both fitness and character building in a team environment. Almost every sport requires its participants are at the peak of their fitness. Top players need a huge amount of stamina as they need to run miles over the duration of a match. More than most sports the players need to run backwards a lot of the time as it isn't viable for them to turn their back on the game. Special training is needed for the needs to cope with the unique movements.

Teamwork is incredibly important to become successful in the game. Scouts identify individuals who are outstanding. In order to successfully progress in the game it is necessary to evolve from being a talented individual into being a great team player. Almost every successful professional player is fully aware how important the team is and structure their development around this.

A key benefit is tuition funding. For whatever reason some trainees drop out and those that continue also need to consider their future after the short playing career. One way participants benefit is by not building up the same sized debts that many other students accumulate.

A scholarship that includes college soccer training is an amazing opportunity. It offers the prospect of discovering the potential as a sportsman as well as providing funded higher education. Some of the best players can go on to become stars at club or even international level.

OK....forgive me I am a bit ahead of myself, but that's just the way I work. I can't sit and wait for the agency training to find out what I should do to get my house ready for our first step as a foster family, which will be respite care. I want to get my bio kids settled into their new room situations as we go through the training. So....Here's my situation. I have a guest room on the 1st floor of my house, but all other bedrooms are on second floor. I don't feel comfortable having a child (age 4-8) sleep downstairs by him/herself and not sure they would allow that anyway. Other option is an upstairs bedroom that currently has a crib (that my almost 3 year old is still in, but moving her to her big sis's room). We are wondering if we should get a toddler bed in there with the crib, or do they not allow sibs in the same room? We hope to respite sib pairs where the older child is around 5 years old. Do we need a twin bed for a 5 yr old? The room is not large, so a toddler or the longer youth bed version would work better.
Most of the younger foster kids in our area are in sib groups, so being able to sleep at least 2 would allow us to help a lot more foster families with respite. Thanks for entertaining my inability to wait.

Tired of Trying to Make Your Marriage Work Alone?

?

By Dwight Bain, Nationally Certified Counselor & Certified Life Coach

Right now you know someone, probably a woman working two jobs, (not counting parenting children and running a household), who is trying to make their marriage work and they are in it alone. It may be a co-worker, a sister, a neighbor or friend at church, but you know this person, and since it?s most likely a woman let?s consider it from her point of view because she is in a tough place. So while you may see her smiling on the outside talking about her love for her man, here's what may be going on inside that house when you aren?t there to see it.

She's hurting more now than she ever has before. Why? Because Marriage was never meant to be done alone. So why do these women keep working without help to make their marriage work? A couple of reasons. Obviously they really love the guy on the couch who just can't or won't keep a job or step up to lead his family. This causes another major problem, because she doesn?t want her children to suffer or do without the basics, like new shoes, school supplies or playing little league. And so she does the only thing she can think of doing ? she works, and works and then she works some more. Work is all she can think of doing because an average family needs 60-80 hours of income to take care of their home budget, which means that both parents are working 30-40 hours per week, or one person is working two jobs just trying to keep their family afloat? and that one person is exhausted.

Obviously not every man is a sitting on the couch watching sports while his wife is cooking, cleaning and trying to pay the bills, but tragically there are a lot who do and leave their wife to be the responsible one. In fact, many men are highly motivated and disciplined and go out to find something to do to support his family during tough times so his wife isn?t trying to make it work alone. He realizes that a woman draws emotional strength from knowing her husband will provide for her and the kids. She has the confidence that he will be there for her. This article isn't about guys who dig in during tough times to live out the words of their wedding vows to be there, 'in sickness and in health, for richer- for poorer', no this article is about a very different kind of marriage, and one that gets much worse as time goes by. Let's start by looking at the major problems this exhausted woman faces, and tragically, she faces these challenges alone.

Lazy men or just Losers?

What's up with the guy on the couch who isn't providing enough income to meet the needs of his family or who demands that his wife cook, clean, care for the cars and lawn while they play video games- what makes guys like this act like irresponsible teenagers? Well, face it - some guys are just lazy- they grew up without any self-discipline, or self-respect and they just won't keep gainful employment or if they do work, they aren?t disciplined to budget their money to benefit the family. They need to take a Dave Ramsey financial management course, but probably won?t since they believe their money belongs to them, not their family. Remember the phrase, ?Selfish is ? as Selfish does.?

Their mother's didn't do them any favors since some guys never grow up, and just decide to marry someone to take over where their mother left off? they expect hot meals, clean clothes, healthy children, the bills to be paid and someone to function as an attractive personal assistant- but they refuse to give back to the relationship. This type of marriage isn't a partnership at all, it's sort of like the medieval system of a master and peasant, and the woman is basically expected to be a slave to meet his every need. It?s 100% about him- and 0% for her. That is not God?s plan, but sadly it is common in culture.

Then there is another group of unmotivated men, simply put, they have given up on life, and most see them as 'losers'. They may have failed in their education, or failed in their career aspirations, and have just given up on finding a good job to meet the needs of their family. Some guys in this group will go out to work at a job well below their potential just to avoid feeling like a failure again, which is better than nothing, yet eventually the bills will overshadow the gap in their income, leading to another major financial failure if they don't change. Crushed self image can lead to just walking away from responsibility in life. While it helps to see the psychological root factors, it doesn?t change that it leaves a woman exhausted and empty from trying to make her marriage work alone.

Often women want to make excuses for their husbands continual failures, or blame it on his low self-esteem, but there comes a time in life where a man has to step up to the plate to become a responsible man, which often means him going out to seek some help from others so he doesn't have to not fail again. However, many times he just keeps repeating the same mistakes, which just dumps more problems onto his wife to fix while he escapes by watching sports on TV or online gambling. He may escape with a beer, or with a newspaper, but the story is always the same. It?s someone else?s fault, blame, criticize, cuss or attack? the theme is always about how someone else is the reason they can?t get ahead. You won?t hear them talking about their lack of partnership and you won?t see them calling the counselor or pastor for help. Dump it on the wife to fix? and be moody or temperamental so she will be afraid to speak the truth that his behavior is wrong. Remember, bully behavior won?t pay the bills, and it just scares the people that he says he loves the most.

Watch behavior? if there is a marital partnership it will show up. However, if there is one person doing all the work to make the marriage appear ?normal?, then that will show up too.

It should be noted that sometimes a man is unmotivated because of substance abuse issues. Potheads, alcoholics and porn addicts don't think about providing for their family, they think about themselves. Sometimes what may look like a motivation problem is actually due to bigger psychological or substance issues, which would take professional intervention, diagnosis and treatment. The problem is that addicts don't usually seek help until they crash, and if they are enabled by others, they can stay addicted for years while creating terrible pain and hardship for those around them. Kids suffer, women get exhausted and often homes are foreclosed on while everyone ignores the hard reality that addiction doesn?t get better without intervention, in fact, it often gets worse.

Lost boys become Passive Leaders

The next group of unmotivated men aren't lazy or losers they just never learned which career path to take so they take the first job available. Think of them as ?Lost? because they work hard for years, but struggle to get ahead because they don?t have any direction. Basically they haven't found career coaches, leaders or mentors to guide them in moving up the career ladder. They could step up to become more of a partner if they had some coaching and accountability to change. There are a lot of guys who grew up in crazy dysfunction without any leadership and it?s a bigger group than you would think. Thankfully when these men see a better path they experience rapid results because they step to be the leaders their wives want them to be and it?s fun to watch. They build strong homes and experience peace out of marital partnership. However, if they don?t get some direction these guys may stay stuck and unmotivated for years because they fear seeking out help to discover their career strengths, so they slowly sink financially, while watching other more motivated guys get ahead and have better lives.

An interesting problem is that some guys might actually sabotage any efforts to try and help him because they feels so hyper-sensitive about even discussing how trapped he feels in a dead end job. He may fight against those who reach out with good advice on making some positive career changes to experience the financial freedom to provide for his family in a more stable way. Oddly enough, even though it's their greatest fear, they can often be so prideful they don't let anyone come alongside to help them face it with courage; so they stay stuck in a downward career spiral, leaving the growing financial burden and exhaustion on their wife. Their fear of making a career change hurts the people they say they love the most.

Good guys - or unmotivated men in disguise? Some guys may appear to be clean-cut, all-American, likable husbands and fathers who volunteer at church, mow the grass, don't act mean, hateful or abusive, but they are still married to an exhausted woman because they won?t step up to lead their family. They look like a great guy to the public, or people at church, but they just don?t partner with their wife, which makes everything tougher because God never designed marriage to be a ?one person does all the work? kind of relationship. In fact, if a woman is overworking to make up for the areas where her husband is unmotivated to change she will often resent him and the relationship will suffer, or fail.

View a health marriage as a two person bicycle. It works great when both people are pedaling together, but it is EXHAUSTING when one person is trying to pedal twice as fast because the other one won?t do their share of the work.

When should an exhausted woman who feels alone in her marriage speak up?

There is tremendous pressure placed on women to 'do the right thing' for her kids, which often is interpreted as being forced to provide the latest and greatest cell phone, elaborate birthday parties and expensive forms of entertainment for their kids. It is not a sign of bad parenting to say 'no' to things you cannot afford it's actually a sign of strength and will help a child learn that you can't have everything you want. Part of being a responsible adult is learning how to control and manage financial impulses. This takes financial pressure off of both the husband and wife in a marriage, but sadly many couples don?t sit down to work on budgets together, since one person frequently does all the earning while the other does the spending. The lack of partnership in dealing with budgets often bankrupt families. If a woman sees this happening and doesn?t speak up, she will be evicted along with her kids. Better to speak up now, rock the boat a little instead of calling U-Haul and friends to help make a hasty move after the house is foreclosed on.

Silence about the lack of partnership in a marriage can create a downward spiral of bad behavior, especially with spending when moms try to over-compensate for the lack of parenting from their passive husbands, or to cover the guilt she feels from being gone so much of the time trying to make more money to pay the bills. Overspending to make up for the lack of marital partnership often ends up with spoiled children, strained marriages and a pending financial disaster. Silence is the worst approach to take when there is a lack of marital partnership.

Saying ?NO? is a lot better than collecting massive debt to create an artificial lifestyle to keep everyone feeling happy for a while. Some women live in continual fear that the credit card lifestyle they secretly use to fill the gap of living with a passive man will one day come crashing down, so they keep their credit spending hidden like an addiction inside, hoping every day that she will make it to the mailbox before her husband discovers her secret? when speaking up would have been a stronger course of action.

Partners talk about issues, good, bad, ugly, they talk about it and often can solve the problem. If you are married to a passive partner at least bring up the problems. But don?t nag, no one listens to critical whining? it?s a waste of breath.

Lack of Partnership? It?s your job to speak now

Mark Twain said, "If the truth hurts- it should." Women married to passive husbands often don't want to hear the truth about the love of their life. They would rather live in the illusion of their feelings that he is a ?great guy? and that their marriage is ?normal? than to look into the mirror and see the truth. They might fiercely defend his lack of employment, his bad luck with bosses, point out how he loves the kids but just doesn't have time for them because he needs to exercise and be on the church softball team; because once they openly acknowledge that their husband is an unmotivated man, it makes it real, and once it's real, it means that something has to change.

It's hard to face this reality, and it's hard to confront a man they care about, so to avoid the risk of hurting his feelings they just carry the burdens inside and work harder. Another common way women avoid making their husband uncomfortable is by secretly asking their parents for money to make it another month, and grandparents are suckers when it comes to providing for the needs of their daughter and grandkids? so it goes on month after month until someone runs out of cash. No more cash means things eventually will crash and everyone will have to face the truth that was there all along. Marriages can?t work with one person doing all the work.

Finances quickly force things out into the open that might have gone unnoticed when there is more disposable income. Exhausted women feel desperate when they reach the end of their financial rope? without access to lines of equity, retirement accounts or the inability to get a family loan from parents who may already be financially stretched from the tough economy. When she runs out of options a woman has to face a painful reality. Get honest about the problems caused by the lack of partnership in her marriage and then confront him boldly. Sadly some women are so afraid to say something to hurt feelings that they silently find negative ways to cope, (overeating is the most common). She will slowly and silently drown in her sadness if someone close to the situation doesn't step in to ask some direct questions and offer real help. Marriages require partnership.

Speaking the truth isn't about attacking a man's character as a human being, it's about the basic reality of a shared partnership to run a family together. Emotionally, Financially, Parenting, Household chores? it takes two responsible adults to make it work. Partnership is about sharing marital responsibility instead of dumping everything onto an exhausted women who is essentially going through life alone like a single parent, (except she just happens to be legally married to an unmotivated man who keeps dumping problems on her lap to solve).

Sadly, it may take an exhausted women feeling completely overwhelmed to finally take action and say, 'listen Mister- I desperately need help running this household and it's time for you to grow up and help me!' A husband-wife partnership requires both people yet some women are so used to the dysfunction of living with an unmotivated man that she is almost numb to the idea that things could ever change. If she doesn?t speak up with boldness the bitterness of time will cause her to explode in rage? and no one listens to a screaming woman. So the cycle often repeats.

Change requires Confrontation

No one likes conflict, but this type of relationship problem can't improve without direct communication and confrontation. Most women won't be able to do this alone, because most women have tried many ways to get their unmotivated husband to change and it didn't work. So if talking to him doesn't work, a woman has to have some back-up to confront in a way the unmotivated man can begin to hear. This may come from a parent, a trusted friend, pastor, counselor or career coach.

Be sensitive to this exhausted woman, she needs someone to help her turn her husband around, but she doesn't need to be judged or criticized- she does enough against herself every single day. If you want to really help her, don't blame, just point out the truth of her situation and ask how you can help. There is a biblical principle that says, "in the multitude of counselors there is wisdom and safety." (Proverbs 15:11) And this woman needs both? wisdom and safety, so be kind as you move forward to gently, but firmly offer help.

Sometimes it may involve the passive man having someone come alongside to create a step by step approach of accountability that includes building confidence through attending men's groups, leadership events, personal development seminars, career coaching or church retreats on learning new skills as a healthy husband and father. The information for unmotivated men to change into loving leaders is available- it's out there. Still, he has to take responsibility to go out and seek it. The formula works like this: R=R simply put, RESPONSIBILITY = RESULTS. When a man takes positive action to change his family, the results are an improved relationship and stronger partnership.

Often he won't begin to change until facing some very hard realities. The most severe that he may lose everything of value to him if he doesn't take bold action to turn things around for his family before it's too late. These aren?t threats, because no one takes a threat seriously. It?s the reality that trying to petal for two eventually leads to the bicycle crashing and everyone getting hurt.

Leading families in partnership together

A man has to move from being an unmotivated man to becoming more self-disciplined as a leader for his family, and if you say that word very slowly, you will discover the real answer to solve many of the problems of an exhausted wife? she needs someone to 'lead -her'. Not a boss lording over her- she needs a partner. She needs a motivated man who wants to build a great family by her side, no longer like a married 'single parent' no- now as partners building memories, instead of being in misery.

When a man learns how to be a responsible and motivated leader things can turn around rapidly, and no matter how deep the financial pressures they are in, when a husband and wife are working together they will not just survive it, they will thrive from the blessings of being partners pulling together through the toughest of times, instead of slowly drifting apart. It makes their partnership stronger and their marriage gets rock solid as God intended; remember, marriage was never meant to be done alone.

Someone you know is an exhausted woman trying to make her marriage work alone. May these words challenge you to reach out with God's love and a gentle heart to let her know she is not alone and that she can count on you for support as she takes action to finally end the exhaustion and aloneness from trying to make her marriage work alone. Do her a favor, give her this article, and more importantly, give her your prayers that starting today she can experience a marital partnership with the man she loves.

Washington State Cougars coach Mike Leach bans players from Twitter

Cougars players aren't to use Twitter at all, even to tweet about the joys of life.

Washington State Cougars coach Mike Leach announced his players were banned from using Twitter, Christian Caple of the Spokesman Review reported on Tuesday.

Leach became the latest coach to ban the popular social networking site. Florida State Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher banned his team from using Twitter earlier this summer.

Boise State coach Chris Petersen implemented a Twitter ban last year, and soon Kansas coach Turner Gill and South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier followed.

The normally outspoken Leach was a bit blunt in his reasoning, saying, "I decided." He also said he doesn't even want to see players tweeting, "I love life."

Tweeting among athletes has been a hot topic that usually results in a lot of feet placed in mouths. Florida State defensive back Tyler Hunter prompted his team's ban after the sophomore went on a rant about killing police officers after he was pulled over in a traffic stop.

Leach told reporters that if they see a tweet from any of his players to let him know so that he could suspend him. Caple says he was joking a bit with the statement.

The Cougars are 2-5 overall this year under Leach and still searching for their first Pac-12 win. They play No. 17 Stanford on the road on Saturday.

Discovering the Strength of the Human Spirit | Fatherhood Channel

Shantel Sims says her work with the homeless community has taught her much about the strength of the human spirit. ?I have seen people lose everything and never give up hope,? she says.

Homeless No More. Vietnam Veteran gets keys to new home

Vietnam Veteran Louis McDonald, left, with Crossroads Property Manager Jessica Welch, center, ?and OST Veteran Outreach Director Cedric Halyard, celebrates getting the keys to his new home. Mr. McDonald is one of more than 1,000 Veterans and their family members served by Operation Sacred Trust in Broward and Miami-Dade counties each year.

As a Family Support Specialist for Henderson Behavioral Health, Ms. Sims is assigned to Operation Sacred Trust, OST, where she provides intensive support to South Florida Veteran families who are experiencing or facing homelessness to help them achieve housing stability. OST is part of a national initiative of the Department of Veterans Affairs, known as the ?Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program, established to end homelessness for America?s Veterans.

Locally, OST team members are assigned to the initiative by?collaborative community nonprofit agencies, including Carrfour Supportive Housing, PAIRS Foundation, and Henderson Behavioral Health. The program serves more than 1,000 Veterans and their family members in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Shantel Sims
Family Support Specialist
Operation Sacred Trust

What inspires you to serve Veterans?

I have many close friends from my hometown in Salt Lake City, Utah that have left their families, loved ones, and friends at home in order to serve their country. I have so much respect for the selflessness that our Veterans exhibit. I take pride in the opportunity I have been given to serve the Veterans in our community. The work I do with Veterans is my way of giving back to individuals that have sacrificed so much to protect our country. ?

What is an experience that stands out?

One experience that stands out for me is the assistance I provided to the first couple I worked with at OST. This particular Veteran and his wife had recently moved into an apartment and had very limited income. They had just enough money to make it month to month; however, they had fallen on hard times and needed assistance with paying their electric bill in order to avoid having their utilities disconnected. OST was able to provide assistance with paying their owed fees, ensuring that they would continue to have electricity in their home. This couple was so appreciative and was genuinely grateful for the assistance OST provided. I could tell from my interaction with them that they were dedicated to sustaining their housing in the community. It was so great to provide that couple with the peace of mind they were looking for.

Shantel Sims

Family Support Specialist ?Shantel Sims, right, with OST Team Member Christina Persaud at opening of new community for formerly homeless singles and families in Miami.

What?s your hope for the impact of your service?

I am really excited about OST continuing to make a difference in the lives of Veterans. I have seen the impact the OST program has in regard to ending homelessness. It is such an amazing feeling to assist someone with moving into a home that they can call their own. I know that OST will continue to make a positive impact within the Veteran community. I hope that every Veteran that we serve knows how appreciative OST is for their service and dedication to our country.

What connection do you have to the Veteran or homeless community?

I have a social work background working with homeless individuals. Working with the homeless population has taught me that the human spirit is so strong. I have seen people lose everything and never give up hope. I truly feel honored for the opportunity I was given to work with the homeless population. I will never forget the individuals I worked with and will always remember their courage to keep moving forward even in the most difficult of times.

What?s a lesson you?ve learned this year?

I have learned that even though people have different backgrounds, experiences, and stories we are all working towards the same goal. We all have a need to feel safe and secure, even when that goal, for some, has seemed so far out of reach. Meeting that need for security can change someone?s entire outlook on life and give them a new sense of hope.?

Pippa Middleton pens party book, "startled" at fame

LONDON (Reuters) - Paparazzi favourite Pippa Middleton is already a global celebrity. Now the 29-year-old sister of the future British queen is aiming to become a global brand.

The woman whose appearance at the spectacular 2011 wedding between Kate Middleton and Prince William caused as much of a sensation as the bride herself has written a recipe and party planning book which hits the shelves this week.

"Celebrate: A Year of British Festivities for Families and Friends" has been praised and pilloried in equal measure ahead of its Thursday release, but, perhaps predictably, Middleton's introductory comments have dominated the headlines.

In them, she addresses her status as one of the world's most photographed individuals, and even tackles the topic many people most closely associate her with - her behind.

"It's a bit startling to achieve global recognition (if that's the right word) before the age of 30, on account of your sister, your brother-in-law and your bottom," she wrote with a candour that won admirers in the royalty-obsessed British press.

"One day I might be able to make sense of this. In the meantime I think it's fair to say that it has its upside and its downside." The upside could be the size of the book deal.

Penguin imprint Michael Joseph, which is publishing the 416-page glossy hardback in Britain, has declined to give details of the size of the agreement, although a spokeswoman said some media coverage of the book had bordered on fiction.

The widely reported, but unsourced, amount is 400,000 pounds, a sum which to most unpublished authors would appear astronomic although such advances are not unheard of.

Lena Dunham, three years Middleton's junior and the American creator of HBO comedy "Girls", was paid more than $3.5 million for her first book, according to the New York Times.

NO INTERVIEWS

The Penguin spokeswoman did not confirm a Daily Mail report, also unsourced, that Middleton had signed up for more books, and added that one-on-one interviews to promote the publication were "never part of the plan".

The British media linked the decision to royal sensitivities over the likelihood that Middleton would be asked questions about the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - the titles her royal brother-in-law and sister have now adopted.

The Middletons' relationship with the press has not been easy of late.

When Kate was photographed topless on holiday, the royal family sued the French magazine that published images which the palace described as a "grotesque" breach of privacy.

A tabloid picture editor estimated Pippa was photographed by paparazzi up to 400 times a day, underlining how important the sisters have become for the celebrity and tabloid press.

As well as selling newspapers and magazines and driving internet traffic, they are also considered major trend-setters who can sell outfits faster than just about anyone.

Now Pippa hopes to turn her experience working for her parents' party planning company to good commercial use.

Early reaction to Celebration, excerpts of which appeared in the Mail on Sunday, has ranged from the snide to the supportive.

The Daily Mail's Jan Moir could barely hide her scepticism.

"Critics might wonder what Pippa Middleton really knows about entertaining - particularly as she looks like a girl who has spent her entire life being entertained," she wrote.

"From the moment she appeared in butter satin at her sister's wedding, Pippa has struck absolutely no one as the kind of girl you would always find in the kitchen at parties."

But Bryony Gordon takes up her defence in the Daily Telegraph, which, like the Mail, is generally pro-royal.

While conceding that "the abiding feeling generated by Celebrate should be one of nausea," she praises Middleton for avoiding obvious exploitation of her royal connections.

Of "oddly comforting" recipes, Gordon adds: "If the world's most famous bottom can make blackberry butter, then I can too."

Project Implementation Office established at the Jordanian Ministry of Water and Irrigation

This press release is available in German.

Amman/ Leipzig. Following an initiative proposed by Jordan's Ministry of Water and Irrigation, the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and the Jordanian Ministry of Water and Irrigation are currently developing an extensive programme designed to improve water management in Jordan. The proposed decentralisation of sanitation and reuse of water is designed to significantly alleviate the issues of water scarcity and groundwater protection that Jordan faces today. During this process it is important to sustainably align fundamental social conditions as well as political and administrative standards with wastewater treatment technology requirements. During her visit to Jordan on 21st October, Annette Schavan, Federal Minister of Education and Research, has together with Jordan's Minister of Water and Irrigation, officially inaugurated the Implementation Office that has been established for this purpose at the Jordanian Ministry of Water and Irrigation.

With funding from the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) under the "Integrated Water Resource Management" sponsorship programme (02WM1212), the UFZ and the Jordanian Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MWI) have set up a Project Office at the MWI designed to co-ordinate the development of an implementation strategy on decentralised wastewater treatment scenarios in rural and peri-urban areas over the next three years. Many of Jordan's households are not connected to mains sewerage systems, and the indirect disposal of untreated wastewater through cesspools poses considerable risks to the country's scarce groundwater resources. This could be avoided by reclaiming and reusing wastewater locally, thus significantly contributing to an improved water balance in one of the most arid countries in the world. Jordan proposes a share of recycled water of up to 15% of the overall water quantity available, to be used primarily for agricultural purposes.

This joint Jordanian-German initiative aims to integrate the relevant institutions and technologies into the current political strategy of Jordan while also giving consideration to the socio-economic environment, and to study the conditions required for successful implementation. In the process, new markets will be opened up, not least in other countries where water is scarce since the procedures and methods developed will be transferable so that other regions may apply them efficiently as well.

MWI and UFZ pursue their goal by using the so-called participatory approach, which is new in many ways: They are building a visible bridge between research, development, water resource policy and implementation. A National Implementation Committee (NICE) is to develop the implementation strategy, where the interests of all major stakeholders of Jordan will be represented. Established experts from the GWP Regional Sections and corresponding networks will be involved to help create the fundamental conditions required for decentralised wastewater treatment systems. Special workshops and consultations (capacity development) are currently being conceived in line with requirements. It must be emphasised that rather than serving as a substitute for centralised disposal plants, decentralised wastewater structures should be put into place where they can achieve greater economies as opposed to centralised solutions. The most suitable locations will be identified by way of a GIS based analysis developed at the UFZ and designed to evaluate and visualise economic, ecological, demographic and physical factors for decision-making. This will allow for earmarking such locations that pose a particularly high risk to groundwater resources.

The NICE project evolved as a result of the groundwork undertaken in the lower Jordan River watershed by the IWRM project, SMART (Sustainable Management of Available Water Resources with Innovative Technologies), which is also sponsored by the BMBF. Research institutions, regulatory authorities, universities and water utilities from Germany, Jordan, Israel and Palestine are all involved in the project consortium. A particular highlight in Jordan is the Research, Demonstration and Training Facility in Fuheis (near Amman) where decentralised wastewater treatment technologies and options for agricultural reuse have been tested locally during normal operation since 2010. The SMART project includes the seven pilot plants for decentralised wastewater treatment and reuse that are currently under construction in rural and peri-urban areas in Jordan.

The project implemented jointly by MWI, BMBF and UFZ is a major step forward, combining environmental research and technology transfer with the core elements of international co-operation. It adds a whole new facet to application-oriented research the UFZ is committed to.

Accelerated Depreciation Isn't the Cure to Small Business's ...

As part of an election year effort to show that he?s friendly to small business, President Obama has been claiming recently that he:

?. . .has signed in to law 18 tax cuts that directly help small businesses [including] ?. extended accelerated bonus depreciation for two million businesses.?

Accelerated depreciation allows immediate expensing of investment costs. By increasing near term tax deductions, the White House explains, small business owners get to keep more of their income.

Small business advocate, Dorothy Coleman, Vice President for tax and domestic economic policy with the National Association of Manufacturers, agrees, saying depreciation tax breaks:

?Clearly lower the tax costs for investments made by smaller companies.?

But policies like accelerated depreciation are doing little to get small business owners into the President?s camp.

A Manta poll conducted in the beginning of August has 61 percent of small company owners supporting Mitt Romney and only 26 percent supporting the Barack Obama. Moreover, the same poll reveals that 54 percent of small business owners believe that the Republican party is the biggest supporter of small business as compared to only 19 percent who think it?s the Democrats.

While small business owners, no doubt, favor the Republicans for many reasons, one is surely the fact that the President?s policies help few small business owners.

Consider Accelerated Depreciation

The National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) surveys have persistently shown that small business owners believe that weak demand for their products and services is biggest problem they face.

With revenue weak since the start of the Great Recession, few small business owners making capital investments to expand. And if your business isn?t making capital investments, being able to write off their value immediately does little for you.

Moreover, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) data shows that sole proprietorships (which make up 72 percent of all small businesses) in very few industries have much depreciation. In 2009, the most recent year of data availability, the depreciation deduction averaged only 6.8 percent of net income for sole proprietorships with net income. In four out of five small businesses operate in industries in which the average depreciation deduction was less than 10 percent of net income.

If You Don?t Have Much Depreciation Expense

Accelerating it doesn?t do much for you.

By the President?s own admission, accelerated bonus depreciation only benefits only 2 million small businesses. With the IRS reporting 31.6 million business tax returns filed in 2008, that means only a little over 6 percent of small businesses benefited from this tax cut.

That?s just not enough small business owners to sway the polling data.
