2 Reasons Why Low-calorie Weight loss diet plans Are broken ...

Have you been intending to consume a low-calorie diet regime in order to shed weight body fat! Prior to deciding to do this, look at this article to find out the reason why low-calorie weight loss programs aren't effective!

SizeGenetics. I cannot let you know how many people have e-mailed me saying that they implemented certain popular low-calorie weight loss programs for a few weeks to discover which they never have misplaced much fat. Therefore they deemed in which weight loss is impossible and therefore, they give up this diet system altogether!

The main reason low-calorie weight loss programs aren't effective will be: by consuming low-calorie foods, your system basically continues to be malnourished. You are feeling fed up all the time. Just forget about workouts, you don't have adequate vitality to complete actually your family activities. Every one of these the unexpected happens because your metabolic rate will be reduced!

If you want to shed weight successfully, you have to retain these two things in your mind:

1. Calories are not your own opponents: Calories are not what you ought to prevent; calories have to supply your system with the necessary diet as well as. Whenever your physique will get adequate foods, it'll increase your metabolic rate, that can instantly result in weight loss!

Unhealthy calories are the type that are offered within fast foods. Thus as you is not going to collect body fat by eating 10 apples daily (even though just one the apple company includes almost 100 calories), you will for sure acquire body fat by eating 10 cheese burgers!

That's the fundamental difference! You should prevent vacant calories (that is, fast foods) as well as take hold of negative calorie foods, including fruit and veggies. Today negative calorie does not imply that there's no calorie over these foods; that simply means that in order to break down by themselves, these food types will force your system to lose a lot more calories than they supply! This kind of leads to calorie deficit that can in the end result in weight loss!

2. Muscle development is a must: Have you any idea in which in order to preserve by themselves, muscle tissues burn up a lot of your own calories? This kind of in essence means that the more trim muscle tissues you've, the actual faster you will be able to shed weight! Ingesting protein-rich foods is a great way of constructing trim muscle tissues; training regularly in the gym is an additional. There is certainly one more however advantage of consuming protein-rich foods: you will not feel hungry many times; as a result, the potential for eating too much is nearly non-existent. Pai Skincare.

To eat low-calorie foods, you are not able to develop muscle tissues; as an alternative a person Drop muscle tissues. Whenever your physique doesn't have adequate trim muscle tissues, it isn't able to burn fat as your metabolic rate continues to be at an unusually low-level. So that is a a lot more reason low-calorie diet plans aren't effective!

Many of these low-calorie diet plans will simply help you drop drinking water as well as muscle tissues; as you possibly misled directly into thinking you have really misplaced a number of dozens of kilos, you have not misplaced the single most critical factor that is keeping from turning into trim: and that's Body fat! Until you reduce weight, there is no way you can turn out to be suit!

2 studies tie pesticide to bee population crashes

AAAS / Science

A bee with a transmitter glued to its back was one of the specimens in a study that used the radio technology to track what happened to bee colonies exposed to a widely used pesticide.

By Miguel Llanos, msnbc.com

A widely used?farm pesticide first introduced in the 1990s has caused significant changes to bee colonies?and removing it could be the key factor in restoring nature's army of pollinators, according to two studies released Thursday.

The scientists behind the studies?in Europe?called for regulators to consider banning the class of?chemicals known as neonicotinoid insecticides. In the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency told msnbc.com that the studies would be incorporated into a review that's currently under way.

A pesticide?trade group questioned the data, saying the levels of pesticide used were unrealistically high, while the researchers said the levels used were typical of what bees would find on farms.

"Our study raises important issues regarding pesticide authorization procedures,"?stated Mikael Henry, co-author of a study on?honey bees. "So far, they mostly require manufacturers to ensure that doses encountered on the field do not kill bees, but they basically ignore the consequences of doses that do not kill them but may cause behavioral difficulties."

"There is an urgent need to develop alternatives to the widespread use of neonicotinoid pesticides on flowering crops wherever possible," added the authors of the second study on bumble bees.

Last week, a coalition of environmental groups and beekeepers asked the EPA to suspend the use of the pesticide, which is widely used in flowering crops like?corn, sunflower and cotton to combat insects.

The studies are the first?to go outside the lab and into the fields, where the experts said they?detected how the pesticide impacts bees as they collect pollen and pollinate flowers and crops.

Honey bee populations have been crashing around the world in recent years, and pesticides have been suspected, along with other potential factors such as parasites, disease?and habitat loss, in what's known as Colony Collapse Disorder. In the U.S., some beekeepers in 2006 began reporting losses of 30-90 percent of their hives, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Combating Colony Collapse Disorder is hardly an esoteric exercise. The USDA notes that "bee pollination is responsible for $15 billion in added crop value, particularly for specialty crops such as almonds and other nuts, berries, fruits, and vegetables.

"About one mouthful in three in the diet directly or indirectly benefits from honey bee pollination," it adds.

Published in the peer-reviewed journal Science, one study by?British scientists?looked at honey bees and the other by French scientists examined bumble bees, which unlike honey bees live in the wild but also are key pollinators.

In the?bumble bee study, researchers concluded that?colonies treated with?nonlethal levels of?the pesticide "had a significantly reduced growth rate and suffered an 85% reduction in production of new queens" compared to colonies without the pesticide.

"It was quite?massive,"?researcher Penelope Whitehorn said of the reduction?at a press conference Thursday.?(Click here for audio of the news conference.)

"Bumble bees have an annual life cycle and it is only new queens that survive the winter to found colonies in the spring," the authors noted. "Our results suggest that trace levels of neonicotinoid pesticides can have strong negative consequence for queen production by bumble bee colonies under realistic field conditions, and this is likely to have a substantial population-level impact."

In the honey bee study, radio transmitters were attached to the back of?bees?to see how they foraged in conditions with and without the pesticide.

The pesticide, the researchers concluded, impaired the homing ability of bees and exposed bees were two to three times more likely to die while away from the hive. That?"high mortality ...?could put a colony at risk of collapse" within a few weeks of exposure, especially in combination with other stressors,?they noted.

"We were actually quite surprised by the magnitude," Henry told reporters.

CropLife America, a pesticides trade group, said in a statement that the studies "fail to account for the many real-world factors that impact bee and colony health, and the researchers used unrealistic pesticide dose levels that are not commonly found in practical field situations in agriculture."?

Dave Goulson, a University of Stirling?researcher with the?bumble bee study, countered that the?scientific papers?"are the closest studies to date to look at the real world situation."

A leading U.S. researcher said the honey bee study "did use a higher dose than?we have seen in pollen and nectar."

That study is "not fatally flawed," added Jeff Pettis of the USDA's Bee Research Laboratory, "but the higher dose must be considered as being a factor in why they saw the loss of bees."

"The bumble bee study, however, used a very realistic dose and the effect on reproduction was the major finding," he told msnbc.com. "The bumble bee study was very convincing in my opinion in being realistic and showing a significant impact on reproduction."

CropLife America?spokeswoman Mary Emma Young said the dose in the bumble bee study was "a high level, but not as excessive" as in the honey bee study,?and that "similar studies on bumble bees did not show these effects, so more research may be needed."

In the honey bee study, the authors said they tested the bees?at an "intensive cereal farming system" in France and used sublethal?amounts of?thiamethoxam, "a recently marketed neonicotinoid substance currently being authorized in an increasing number of countries worldwide for the protection of oilseed rape, maize and other blooming crops foraged by honey bees."

Goulson noted that EPA rules don't require pesticide makers to test the product as bees navigate over natural distances and yet?that "is where the problems seem to start."

The EPA, contacted by msnbc.com, said?it has "begun reviewing the two studies ... and they will be considered" as part of an?ongoing process that reviews chemicals. Non-EPA scientists will weigh in at a special meeting in the fall, it added.

The prevailing view among most scientists and regulators is that?"complex interactions among multiple stressors" are?to blame, the EPA stated.? "While our understanding of the potential role of pesticides in pollinator health declines is still progressing, we continue to seek to learn what regulatory changes, if any, may be effective."

Volcanic plumbing exposed

Friday, March 30, 2012

Two new studies into the "plumbing systems" that lie under volcanoes could bring scientists closer to predicting large eruptions.

International teams of researchers, led by the University of Leeds, studied the location and behaviour of magma chambers on the Earth's mid-ocean ridge system - a vast chain of volcanoes along which the Earth forms new crust.

They worked in Afar (Ethiopia) and Iceland - the only places where mid-ocean ridges appear above sea level. Volcanic ridges (or "spreading centres") occur when tectonic plates "rift" or pull apart. Magma (hot molten rock) injects itself into weaknesses in the brittle upper crust, erupting as lava and forming new crust upon cooling.

Magma chambers work like plumbing systems, channelling pressurised magma through networks of underground "pipes".

The studies, published in Nature Geoscience, reveal new information about where magma is stored and how it moves through the geological plumbing network. Finding out where magma chambers lie and how they behave can help identify early warning signs of impending eruptions.

Scientists used images taken by the European Space Agency satellite Envisat to measure how the ground moved before, during and after eruptions. Using this data, they built and tested computer models to find out how rifting occurs.

Data in one study showed magma chambers that fed an eruption in November 2008 in the Afar rift of Northern Ethiopia were only about 1 km below the ground. The standard model had predicted a depth of more than 3 km.

It is highly unusual for magma chambers to lie in shallow depths on slow spreading centres such as the Afar rift, where tectonic plates pull apart at about the same speed as human fingernails grow.

Dr Carolina Pagli from the University of Leeds' School of Earth and Environment, who led the study, says: "It was a complete surprise to see that a magma chamber could exist so close to the Earth's surface in an area where the tectonic plates move apart so slowly. The results have changed the way we think about volcanoes."

Dr Pagli also noticed that the ground started "uplifting" (elevating) four months before the eruption, due to new magma increasing pressure in one of the underground chambers. Understanding these precursory signals is fundamental to predicting eruptions.

A wider study of eruptions in Afar and Iceland, two vastly different environments, found remarkable similarities. Many events occurred within a short space of time. Researchers identified multiple magma chambers positioned horizontally and vertically, allowing magma to shoot in several directions. Moving magma triggered earthquakes, and separate magma chambers fed single eruptions.

The 2008 eruption is part of an unusual period of recent volcanic unrest in Ethiopia, and is enabling scientists to learn more about volcanoes at spreading centres. Most spreading centres are under 2 km of water at the bottom of the ocean, making detailed observations extremely challenging. The new knowledge derived from Ethiopian volcanoes will help scientists understand volcanoes in Iceland, where eruptions can have a bigger impact on the UK.

Dr Tim Wright from the School of Earth and Environment, who leads the international Afar Rift Consortium, said: "The dramatic events we have been witnessing in Afar in the past six years are transforming our understanding of how the crust grows when tectonic plates pull apart. Our work in one of the hottest place on Earth is having a direct impact on our understanding of eruptions from the frozen volcanoes of Iceland."

Many Cancer 'Discoveries' Don't Hold Up, Researcher Says

By Sharon Begley
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A former researcher at Amgen Inc has found that many basic studies on cancer -- a high proportion of them from university labs -- are unreliable, with grim consequences for producing new medicines in the future.
During a decade as head of global cancer research at Amgen, C. Glenn Begley identified 53 "landmark" publications -- papers in top journals, from reputable labs -- for his team to reproduce. Begley sought to double-check the findings before trying to build on them for drug development.
Result: 47 of the 53 could not be replicated. He described his findings in a commentary piece published on Wednesday in the journal Nature.
"It was shocking," said Begley, now senior vice president of privately held biotechnology company TetraLogic, which develops cancer drugs. "These are the studies the pharmaceutical industry relies on to identify new targets for drug development. But if you're going to place a $1 million or $2 million or $5 million bet on an observation, you need to be sure it's true. As we tried to reproduce these papers we became convinced you can't take anything at face value."
The failure to win "the war on cancer" has been blamed on many factors, from the use of mouse models that are irrelevant to human cancers to risk-averse funding agencies. But recently a new culprit has emerged: too many basic scientific discoveries, done in animals or cells growing in lab dishes and meant to show the way to a new drug, are wrong.
Begley's experience echoes a report from scientists at Bayer AG last year. Neither group of researchers alleges fraud, nor would they identify the research they had tried to replicate.
But they and others fear the phenomenon is the product of a skewed system of incentives that has academics cutting corners to further their careers.
George Robertson of Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia previously worked at Merck on neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's. While at Merck, he also found many academic studies that did not hold up.
"It drives people in industry crazy. Why are we seeing a collapse of the pharma and biotech industries? One possibility is that academia is not providing accurate findings," he said.
BELIEVE IT OR NOT
Over the last two decades, the most promising route to new cancer drugs has been one pioneered by the discoverers of Gleevec, the Novartis drug that targets a form of leukemia, and Herceptin, Genentech's breast-cancer drug. In each case, scientists discovered a genetic change that turned a normal cell into a malignant one. Those findings allowed them to develop a molecule that blocks the cancer-producing process.
This approach led to an explosion of claims of other potential "druggable" targets. Amgen tried to replicate the new papers before launching its own drug-discovery projects.
Scientists at Bayer did not have much more success. In a 2011 paper titled, "Believe it or not," they analyzed in-house projects that built on "exciting published data" from basic science studies. "Often, key data could not be reproduced," wrote Khusru Asadullah, vice president and head of target discovery at Bayer HealthCare in Berlin, and colleagues.
Of 47 cancer projects at Bayer during 2011, less than one-quarter could reproduce previously reported findings, despite the efforts of three or four scientists working full time for up to a year. Bayer dropped the projects.
Bayer and Amgen found that the prestige of a journal was no guarantee a paper would be solid. "The scientific community assumes that the claims in a preclinical study can be taken at face value," Begley and Lee Ellis of MD Anderson Cancer Center wrote in Nature. It assumes, too, that "the main message of the paper can be relied on ... Unfortunately, this is not always the case."
When the Amgen replication team of about 100 scientists could not confirm reported results, they contacted the authors. Those who cooperated discussed what might account for the inability of Amgen to confirm the results. Some let Amgen borrow antibodies and other materials used in the original study or even repeat experiments under the original authors' direction.
Some authors required the Amgen scientists sign a confidentiality agreement barring them from disclosing data at odds with the original findings. "The world will never know" which 47 studies -- many of them highly cited -- are apparently wrong, Begley said.
The most common response by the challenged scientists was: "you didn't do it right." Indeed, cancer biology is fiendishly complex, noted Phil Sharp, a cancer biologist and Nobel laureate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Even in the most rigorous studies, the results might be reproducible only in very specific conditions, Sharp explained: "A cancer cell might respond one way in one set of conditions and another way in different conditions. I think a lot of the variability can come from that."
THE BEST STORY
Other scientists worry that something less innocuous explains the lack of reproducibility.
Part way through his project to reproduce promising studies, Begley met for breakfast at a cancer conference with the lead scientist of one of the problematic studies.
"We went through the paper line by line, figure by figure," said Begley. "I explained that we re-did their experiment 50 times and never got their result. He said they'd done it six times and got this result once, but put it in the paper because it made the best story. It's very disillusioning."
Such selective publication is just one reason the scientific literature is peppered with incorrect results.
For one thing, basic science studies are rarely "blinded" the way clinical trials are. That is, researchers know which cell line or mouse got a treatment or had cancer. That can be a problem when data are subject to interpretation, as a researcher who is intellectually invested in a theory is more likely to interpret ambiguous evidence in its favor.
The problem goes beyond cancer.
On Tuesday, a committee of the National Academy of Sciences heard testimony that the number of scientific papers that had to be retracted increased more than tenfold over the last decade; the number of journal articles published rose only 44 percent.
Ferric Fang of the University of Washington, speaking to the panel, said he blamed a hypercompetitive academic environment that fosters poor science and even fraud, as too many researchers compete for diminishing funding.
"The surest ticket to getting a grant or job is getting published in a high-profile journal," said Fang. "This is an unhealthy belief that can lead a scientist to engage in sensationalism and sometimes even dishonest behavior."
The academic reward system discourages efforts to ensure a finding was not a fluke. Nor is there an incentive to verify someone else's discovery. As recently as the late 1990s, most potential cancer-drug targets were backed by 100 to 200 publications. Now each may have fewer than half a dozen.
"If you can write it up and get it published you're not even thinking of reproducibility," said Ken Kaitin, director of the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development. "You make an observation and move on. There is no incentive to find out it was wrong."

Hardcore Gaming 101 - Blog: History of computers in Iraq

A full explanation after the jump.

I should check the comments section of each entry more often, since some popular entries continue to be found by readers long after they've fallen off the page. Which I suppose is the inherent problem with blogs. This gem was posted in my previous Videogames of Egypt entry, in August 2011, by a gentleman named Salwan Asaad. He gives a fascinating insight into the early computer game scene in Iraq. I've edited the text slightly for clarity, and I'm reposting it because it's quite a valuable piece of insight. The world isn't at its best right now, but heartfelt recollections like these prove to me that really, deep down, young people all over the world are the same. Many thanks to Mr Asaad for sharing this.

I'm a game developer, originally from Iraq, and now living in Egypt. The gaming situation in Iraq was very identical to what you found in Egypt until around 2005, when things changed in favour of PS2/XBOX and then XBOX360, all modded of course.

However, that's not what I wanted to talk about... You asked how the gaming community looked like in the 1980s and 1990s. Surprisingly, back then, although rarely found, it wasn't much different compared to western countries, perhaps because counterfeiting was at a much lower rate (I personally hadn't seen even one bootlegged console until the mid-1990s) and the economic situation was better.

What we had was more of a real home computing community back then, with meetings, contests, books, and the whole deal. Several computer models were produced in Iraq and the Gulf, mostly based on Japanese models. We had Arabic-supporting NEC PC-6001, PC-6002, and other models, it was called 'Al Warkaa'. We exchanged games via 3.5" floppy disks and sometimes used tape drives. I was one of the Al Warkaa guys.

The Gulf-based Al Alamiah produced MSX home computers. Of which the MSX Sakhr 170 was the absolute most famous, games circulated via MSX cartridges and a big community around it, and I've seen 2.5" floppy discs used. There was a constant contest between the Al Warkaa community and Sakhr 170 community in Iraq to prove which is the better computer (they are both identical from a hardware level). This included a national contest that each group tried to win, involving making games and demos.

Another company, Najm computers, produced Atari home computers. But I only saw a few around, and no real community for it in Iraq. I found this rare picture online:

This is pretty much the only model I've seen back then.

Man... Much lost gaming history.

(AP) ? An ambulance company that serves six rural western Massachusetts towns has purchased a new ambulance thanks to a $150,000 gift from the bass player for the hard rock band Staind.

The gift from Johnny April enabled Highland Ambulance to buy a new vehicle to replace its aging 1998 model.

Highland Ambulance director Michael Rock says the gift was a "godsend." Rock tells The Recorder of Greenfield (http://bit.ly/uOM3IA) the old ambulance was nearing the end its useful life and the company would have been hard pressed affording a new one.

Highland serves the towns of Ashfield, Chesterfield, Cummington, Goshen, Plainfield and Williamsburg. It responds to about 550 calls per year.

April, although originally from Springfield, lives in Goshen.

Staind is best known for its 2001 song "It's Been Awhile."

Baboons, infants show similar gesturing behavior, suggesting shared communication systems

Thursday, March 22, 2012

Both human infants and baboons have a stronger preference for using their right hand to gesture than for a simple grasping task, supporting the hypothesis that language development, which is lateralized in the left part of the human brain, is based on a common gestural communication system. The results are reported in the Mar. 21 issue of the open access journal PLoS ONE.

The researchers, led by Helene Meunier of the University of Strasbourg in France, found that hand preference of both infants and baboons for grasping tasks depended on the location of the object, but there was significant preference for the right hand when pointing (using a communicative gesture) at a specific stimulus, even when the stimulus was closer to the left hand. The authors conclude that their results suggest a common gestural communication system localized in the left hemisphere of the brain that in humans was later "invaded" by vocalization to become language.

Global Travel and Leisure Industry Drive Home Substantial ...

San Jose, California (PRWEB) January 30, 2012

Follow us on LinkedIn The fortunes in the outbound travel & leisure segment and to a certain extent, the trends in the inbound travel are very much dependent on a sound economy. Bleak economic prospects, lack of job security, low wage growth, less disposable income, high interest rates, fiscal tightening and others are all major factors that dampen the spirits and deter the traveller, thereby blocking the conduits through which money flows into the travel and tourism market. Over the coming years, travel and leisure industry outlook appears promising with rise in consumer spending on travel and tourism for both holiday and business trips. Although the global economic downturn in 2009 took a heavy toll on the travel sector world over, with drop in number of international arrivals and global outbound sales, the industry was quick to reverse the trend and get back on track in 2010. There was a marked improvement in international arrivals statistics, primarily owing to the impressive performance by developing regions such as Asia-Pacific and South America. The online travel market stayed insulated from the economic downturn, exhibiting consistent rise in sales and profitability. The vacation rental sector also defied all odds by staying afloat in the recessionary phase, mainly due to its widespread presence across the internet, thereby providing easy accessibility and affordability.

A segment that has witnessed remarkable growth in recent times is the short trips category, with low cost airlines driving up overall demand. Around 50% of outbound travel is made by air, and slashes in airlines fare across the world have had a discernible positive effect on the volume of traffic in the travel sector. In addition, with increasing number of women taking to travel for both business and leisure, the travel and leisure sector is poised for growth not just in terms of revenue, but also with respect to development of expensive and convenient women-friendly facilities. A majority of the women consumers travel abroad for business, and often combines business travels and leisure trips. Taking this into account, business hotels have improved their offerings to include women friendly services such as spas, salons, childcare facilities, and boutiques.

Asia is emerging as a significant market for both inbound and outbound tourism traffic, with China, India, and South Korea representing three major Asian destinations for majority of outbound travel. In the fray are other exotic regions outsides Asia including Mexico, Brazil, Spain, Italy, Russia, and Norway. Unconventional or second-layer vacations spots have taken over popularity of conventional destinations. Additionally, special attractions such as the multi-generational family trips and epicurean journeys are expected to become a vibrant trend in the near future. Overtaking Spain, China became the third leading nation to be most visited, while luxury cruises in Egypt, Zimbabwe and India attracted several foreign tourists.

The research report titled Travel and Leisure: A Global Outlook announced by Global Industry Analysts, Inc., provides a collection of statistical anecdotes, market briefs, and concise summaries of research findings. The report provides a birds eye view of the effervescent and dynamic world of travel and leisure, and a peek into prevailing scenario with data-rich tables offering statistical findings on key regional and international parameters such as, tourist arrivals, tourism expenditure /receipts and spending on travel services among others. The report offers crisp primers on emerging trends shaping the industrys future, and insights into the spate of recent mergers and acquisitions, and other noteworthy corporate developments. Travel market trends and demographic behavioral patterns are neatly outlined, and illustrated with supporting market data tables. Other regional markets briefly summarized, and annotated with tables include Canada, Japan, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, UK, Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Korea Egypt and others. Also included is an indexed, easy-to-refer, fact-finder directory listing the addresses, and contact details of companies worldwide.

Top Republican super PAC donors backing Romney

(AP) ? Major contributors to a key Republican political organization founded by political strategist Karl Rove have boosted their financial support for Mitt Romney, signaling that the GOP's big money may be starting to coalesce around Romney's candidacy, according to an analysis by The Associated Press of federal election data released Tuesday.

Wealthy GOP donors like Bob Perry, Philip H. Geier Jr. and Jerry Perenchio collectively provided much of the $6.4 million in contributions last month to the pro-Romney "super" political committee Restore Our Future, mostly from Perry's $3 million contribution, according to campaign records submitted to the Federal Election Commission.

The donors also are among the most generous contributors to American Crossroads, the super PAC founded by Rove, who was a top adviser to President George W. Bush. Crossroads is likely to become the pre-eminent GOP group airing negative advertisements against President Barack Obama this year.

The new campaign reports illustrate the financial advantage that Romney ? the winner in Tuesday's Illinois primary ? harnessed heading into Super Tuesday primary elections. Romney, ahead in the count of Republican delegates, was aided by more than $29 million worth of ads paid for by Restore Our Future, the super PAC supporting his campaign.

That $29 million figure is higher than spending by any other Republican super PAC or campaign, including Romney's own campaign. Super PACs, like Romney's and Rove's groups, are not permitted under federal law to coordinate directly with campaigns ? but the PACs often pay for media campaigns that allow the candidates to concentrate on state organizations and get-out-the vote efforts.

So far, other GOP candidates have struggled to keep up with the financial support that Romney's candidacy has enjoyed. Gingrich, the former House speaker who won the South Carolina and Georgia primaries, collected only $2.6 million last month while spending roughly $2.8 million during the same period, his campaign said. Much of his support has come in the form of ads from Winning Our Future, which received a $5 million infusion from Las Vegas casino mogul Sheldon Adelson and his wife, Miriam.

The Rick Santorum-supportive super PAC ? the Red, White and Blue Fund ? brought in $2.9 million last month, including $600,000 from longtime supporter and Wyoming businessman Foster Friess. Santorum's own campaign pulled in about $8.9 million in contributions during the same period when he saw a surge in support.

All told, the money flowing to Republican super PACs is expected to counterbalance cash flowing to Obama's campaign, which has raised more than $120 million in total contributions as of Feb. 29. The political committee supporting Obama, Priorities USA Action, collected $2 million last month.

Romney has lost several Southern primaries, but his campaign raised more than $11 million in February. Helping his campaign ? albeit independently under federal law ? Restore Our Future has spent millions on attack ads against rivals Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum.

Perry, 79, previously gave $1 million to the pro-Romney super PAC in addition to his $3 million last month. He also gave $2.5 million to Rove's group. He heads a major Houston-based homebuilding empire and has been a million-dollar player among GOP fundraisers since the late 1990s, working closely with candidates and causes tied to Rove. Perry was a big money contributor to Bush's campaigns for Texas governor and was a top bundler for his 2000 presidential race.

Geier, 77, a veteran advertising man, gave $100,000 to the pro-Romney group after previously donating $250,000 as well as giving $500,000 to Rove's group. He is chairman emeritus of the New York-headquartered Geier Group, a global media company. Geier was a campaign bundler for Sen. John McCain's 2000 presidential campaign and has given to the Republican National Committee, as well as to GOP leaders like Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida.

Perenchio, 81, gave $500,000 and has donated $3 million to Rove's group since 2010. He is a former chairman for the Spanish-language Univision television network. He was a top bundler for McCain's 2008 presidential campaign. Perenchio, who heads Chartwell Partners LLC, gave $10,000 last year to the National Republican Congressional Committee and $5,000 to the re-election campaign of House Speaker John Boehner.

In 2004, Perry was the largest single donor to the Swift Boat Vets and POWs for Truth, giving nearly $5 million to the tax-exempt organization. The group, composed of Vietnam War-era Navy veterans, was blamed for misleading attacks on Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's service as a Swift Boat officer in Vietnam. Perry also gave $3 million that cycle to the Progress for America Voter Fund, another group supporting Bush.

When Texas Gov. Rick Perry ? he is no relation to Bob Perry ? entered the Republican presidential race in 2011 against Romney, Perry at first supported his home state candidate, giving $100,000 to a super PAC supporting the Texan's candidacy. But as Rick Perry's campaign faltered, Bob Perry shifted his allegiance to Romney. He gave $1 million last year before his massive $3 million donation last month.

Others who gave to the group supporting Romney:

?Kenneth C. Griffin, 43, a top hedge fund director, gave $100,000 to Restore Our Future after donating $100,000 earlier along with $300,000 to Rove's group last year. Griffin heads the Chicago-based Citadel Investment Group and was a McCain bundler in 2008. Last year, he gave $38,000 to the RNC and $22,500 to the National Republican Senatorial Committee, as well as thousands more to GOP candidates including Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia and Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts.

?Harold Simmons, 80, gave $100,000 following an earlier $100,000 donation in January. He also gave $100,000 last month to Winning Our Future, the super PAC supporting Gingrich; his wife, Annette, gave $1 million to the Red, White and Blue Fund. A billionaire, Simmons was the top benefactor for Rove's group, providing $12 million between his personal checkbook and the coffers of Texas-based Contran Corp., a holding company with interests including chemicals and waste management.

Simmons rivaled Perry as a $4 million contributor to the Swift Boat group in 2004 and was a bundler for the Bush and McCain presidential campaigns. In addition to his $12 million donation to Rove's group, Simmons has also given more than $200,000 to GOP candidates and party PACS and groups.
