Greek debt talks drag on but banks signal progress (AP)

ATHENS, Greece ? Greece's private creditors signaled progress late Tuesday on a debt-relief deal but crucial talks between Greek coalition leaders about forcing more austerity upon a hostile public were again postponed.

Anger flared on the streets of Athens as more than 20,000 protesters marched through the Greek capital and unions called a general strike Tuesday against the new cuts in jobs and spending. The strike halted trains and ferries, closed down schools and banks and put state hospitals on short staffing.

Several hundred protesters clashed with riot police outside Parliament and set fire to a German flag ? upset over Germany's role in demanding more austerity from Athens.

"They are committing a crime against the country. They are driving wage-earners into poverty and wiping out pensioners and the unemployed," said Vangelis Moutafis, a senior member of Greece's largest union, the GSEE. "They are selling off state assets for nothing. This cannot continue."

Greek Premier Lucas Papademos delayed a meeting with his coalition parties till Wednesday, staying in talks until late in the night with top bank negotiators as well as with debt inspectors from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

Greece is under massive time pressure to secure a new euro130 billion ($170 billion) bailout from its partners in the euro and the IMF without which it will default in March on its massive debts.

Representatives of the Institute of International Finance, which has been leading the talks for private bondholders on forgiving Greece part of its debts, had a "constructive meeting" with Papademos, IIF spokesman Frank Vogl said.

Papademos and Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos will soon brief the rest of the 17-nation eurozone on the proposed deal, Vogl said ? a sign the bond-swap deal could be close.

The meeting of eurozone finance ministers could happen as soon as Thursday in Brussels, according to officials, although that will depend on finding agreement in Athens on the terms of the second bailout.

Greece has been kept solvent since May 2010 by payments from a euro110 billion ($145 billion) international rescue loan package. When it became clear the money would not be enough, a second bailout was decided last October.

As well as passing new austerity measures, the second bailout depends on Greece's separate talks with banks and other private bondholders to forgive euro100 billion ($132 billion) in Greek debt. The private investors are expected to swap their current bonds for new bonds worth 50 percent less than the original face value, with longer repayment terms and a lower interest rate.

Without the new debt deals, Greece would face a disastrous default in late March.

The intense talks in Athens were supposed to be finished last weekend, but have dragged on over EU-IMF demands for a new round of austerity measures that include civil service job cuts and slashing Greece's minimum wage.

The Greek government has already accepted that it must cut 15,000 state jobs in 2012 to get the new bailout, as well cut 2012 spending by a further euro3.3 billion ($4.3 billion), reduce wage costs in the private sector and recapitalize banks without nationalizing them.

But disagreement remains between Greek lawmakers on the extent of those cuts.

A government official said Papademos' draft agreement on the austerity deal would be sent to Greek party leaders for scrutiny early Wednesday. "It took much longer than expected," the official told the AP, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the talks.

The government's coalition partners ? the majority Socialists, main rival conservatives and the small right-wing LAOS party ? are also at odds over whether to go ahead with plans for an early election in April.

The Socialists, who handed over power to Papademos in November, want him to stay through parliament's four-year term that ends in late 2013, while conservatives are demanding an April vote.

LAOS leader George Karatazferis also criticized eurozone heavyweights France and Germany on Tuesday, saying they were carrying out an "aggressive humiliation of Greece" with all their demands for new austerity measures.

A disorderly bankruptcy by Greece would likely lead to its exit from the eurozone, a situation that European officials have insisted is impossible because it would hurt other weak countries like Portugal, Ireland and Italy.

But on Tuesday, the Neelie Kroes, one of the EU's 27 commissioners, said Greece's exit wouldn't be a disaster.

"It's always said: if you let one nation go, or ask one to leave, the entire structure will collapse. But that is just not true," Kroes told Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant.

She added that "Greece is not living up to its promises: too few savings, too few reforms ... It's becoming a Greek mantra: 'We cannot. We won't'!"

But EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso quickly stepped in to counter her remarks.

"We are in a very decisive moment regarding the future of Greece and the future of the euro. We want Greece in the euro," he said. "The costs of a default by Greece, the costs of a potential exit of Greece from the euro would be a lot higher than the costs of continuing to support Greece."

While Greece remains cut off from international bond markets ? where it would have to pay interest of about 35 percent to sell 10-year issues ? it maintains a market presence through regular short-term debt sales.

On Tuesday, Greek borrowing costs dropped slightly as the country raised euro812 million ($1.06 billion) in an auction of 26-week treasury bills. The interest rate was 4.86 percent, compared to 4.90 percent in a similar auction last month. The auction was 2.72 times oversubscribed.

Chrysler's "Halftime" ad: a roadmap for America? (Reuters)

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) ? Is what is good for Chrysler good for America?

The auto maker courted controversy and won kudos for a two-minute Super Bowl advertisement that was less a car sales pitch than a political message in a presidential election year.

Rugged Hollywood icon Clint Eastwood proclaimed it was "Halftime in America" in the spot that did not mention a Chrysler car or truck but intoned that the automaker's successful turnaround could be used as an example for the United States as it struggles with high unemployment and a slow economic growth rate.

"Detroit's showing us it can be done," Eastwood said.

Traffic on Twitter showed overwhelmingly positive comments for the advertisement. The "Dirty Harry" star and Academy Award-winning director spoke to Americans as if he were a football coach making a halftime speech encouraging his team to work together to win in the second half.

"This country can't be knocked out with one punch," Eastwood said in the ad. "We get right back up again and when we do the world is going to hear the roar of our engines. Yeah, it's halftime America. And, our second half is about to begin."

In the second half of Sunday's game, the New York Giants overcame a one-point halftime deficit to win the NFL's championship, 21-17, over the New England Patriots.

The TV spot was the last shown before the start of the second half of Sunday's game.

A 30-second spot in this year's game televised by NBC cost $3.5 million. Chrysler has not said how much the Eastwood spot cost.

It was the second straight year that Chrysler ran a two-minute spot that was unconventional and drew much internet buzz.

Last year's ad featured rapper Eminem and attached "Imported from Detroit" to Chrysler products, a moniker present in this year's version as well. That ad has been seen more than 21 million times on YouTube and Chrysler executives say it helped push U.S. sales of the automaker's brands including Jeep, Dodge, Ram trucks and Chrysler up 24 percent last year.

Chrysler, the third-biggest U.S. automaker, faced liquidation in 2009 before it was bailed out with $12.5 billion in loans from the Obama Administration. It underwent a restructuring bankruptcy that left it under the control of Italy's Fiat SpA and its hard-charging chief executive, Sergio Marchionne.

Marchionne is now the CEO of both Fiat and Chrysler. Fiat owns 58.5 percent of Chrysler.

STANDING OVATION

Chrysler, which employs the most auto workers in the city of Detroit, last week reported its first full-year profit since 2005. It forecast operating profit would rise 50 percent to $3 billion in 2012, based on an expected 30 percent jump in sales of its cars and trucks.

Last May, the company repaid its U.S. government loans.

Marchionne was in Las Vegas on Sunday where he showed the "Halftime in America" advertisement to Chrysler dealers at an auto dealers convention.

The dealers received the ad warmly, giving it and Marchionne a standing ovation. He did not talk with reporters on Sunday and refused to talk about the Super Bowl ad on Saturday when he held a press conference.

"I think it was the best Super Bowl ad," Joe Massey, a Chrysler dealer in Alabama who was in Las Vegas for the dealer convention, said after the advertisement aired on television. "It hits the right tone and goes straight to your heart."

The Chrysler ad featuring Eastwood generated the third-most Twitter traffic of Sunday's Super Bowl ads, according a measure by Boston advertising and social media agency Mullen. That was the highest Twitter volume of any of the nine automakers airing pitches during the game's broadcast.

The 81-year-old Eastwood played a retired Ford factory worker in Detroit in the 2008 movie, "Gran Torino" and he received high praise from some in the auto industry for his pitchman performance.

Mike Jackson, CEO of AutoNation, the largest U.S. auto dealership group, on Twitter reposted a comment saying: "Clint Eastwood could get elected president with that ad."

"Powerful spot," David Axelrod, a senior adviser to President Obama's re-election team, said on Twitter. White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer also on Twitter said: "Saving the America Auto Industry: Something Eminem and Clint Eastwood can agree on."

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said the campaign had no involvement with the ad.

The Obama administration has yet to act on a $3.5 billion loan proposal from Chrysler for Department of Energy funds to help spur the development of more fuel-efficient automobiles.

Gualberto Ranieri, chief spokesman for Marchionne and for Chrysler, declined to comment on the notion that the advertisement was a thank-you gift to the Obama administration.

"The advertisement speaks for itself," said Ranieri.

I have three friends: Luisa, Isa, and Karson. We're all studying music, Luisa and?Isa are singers and Karson...well let's just say that he's a one man band.?Isa has had a huge crush on Karson ever since he transfered from a different University. Karson's a great guy, extremely nice?and?polite, but most of all a wonderful gentlemen.

Isa?would often talk to me about him. She would tell me how he would sometimes give her a ride to her classes?and how he would call her to ask her if she needed anything. I told her to tell Karson how she feels about him, but she was always too afraid of what the answer might be. I always say, "It's better to know what could be than wondering what could've been." Regardless of what I would tell her, she just wouldn't listen. She was too afraid, that was the problem.

Months passed, she said nothing and just acted "normal" around Karson. Little did she know that he had his eyes set on Luisa for a while. During winter break, Karson and Luisa did a lot of bonding together. They got to know each other a little more and in the end they both found out they liked each other. A week before the semester began, I found out that Luisa and Karson are a couple. I felt happy for Luisa regardless of how?Isa might've?felt. Luisa didn't know?Isa liked Karson, otherwise I'm sure she wouldn't have agreed to be a couple with him.?Isa told me not to tell anybody about her feelings for Karson, so my hands were tied.

Classes begin, we all meet up at choir as usual. But then when class was over, Karson and Luisa were holding hands and?Isa saw it. I saw what had just happened and didn't know what to do, Luisa and Karson were completely oblivious to what was going on. However,?Isa didn't react either, her facial expression didn't say anything about how she was feeling at that moment. She just picked up her stuff and left the classroom.

Two days after this, Luisa talks to me and tells me about how?Isa is acting around her. Luisa had just found out that?Isa had a crush on Karson, she didn't know anything about that. She told me how?Isa wouldn't even say hi to her anymore and would just ignore her coldly. Luisa knew about?Isa's crush?through Karson because he had told her that?Isa had confessed her feelings to him the day after he had confessed his feelings to Luisa. He politely turned?Isa down saying that he was already in a relationship but he wanted to be friends with her. I don't know what?Isa's reaction was to Karson's response, he didn't say anything about what had happened then.

Now,?Isa has completely changed with everyone. She doesn't talk to anybody and she just sits by herself in corners avoiding everyone that wanted to talk to her. She wouldn't even talk to me! What did I do to deserved the silent treatment? I was caught in the middle of everything! I gave her advice but she didn't take it. What I hate is that she's victimizing herself like if it really is everyone's fault. Luisa tries to talk to her, but no avail. I try to talk to her and she won't budge.

Luisa and Isa were best friends before they met me and before Karson came along. They considered themselves sisters! Now everything's changed. I don't know what to do and neither does Luisa because?Isa thinks that everybody's against her, which is not true! She's acting like Luisa stole Karson from her when he wasn't even hers to begin with. I still appreciate her friendship and I don't want to lose that.
