New York priest says child often seducer in sex abuse cases

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Roman Catholic priest in New York expressed sympathy this week for some clergy who sexually abuse children, as well as for convicted child rapist Jerry Sandusky, saying that it is often the "youngster" who is the seducer.

The remarks by the Rev. Benedict Groeschel, 79, co-founder of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal in Westchester County outside New York City, drew strong criticism from the Archdiocese of New York and the support group Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.

"Suppose you have a man having a nervous breakdown, and a youngster comes after him. A lot of the cases, the youngster ? 14, 16, 18 ? is the seducer," Groeschel said when asked by an interviewer from the National Catholic Register, the nation's oldest Catholic newspaper, about his work with priests who abuse children.

Groeschel, who has published numerous books and hosted shows on the Eternal Word Television Network, suggested that children might seduce priests because they lacked a father figure, adding, "They won't be planning to get into heavy-duty sex, but almost romantic, embracing, kissing, perhaps sleeping but not having intercourse or anything like that."

The Catholic Church has been rocked in recent decades by accusations that it tried to cover up the sexual abuse of children by priests and has paid out billions in settlements to abuse victims, bankrupting several U.S. dioceses.

Similar scandals have shaken the lucrative world of college sports, most notably the conviction of Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant coach, for sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years, most of them in the campus football showers.

Groeschel referred to Sandusky as "this poor guy." Pondering how Sandusky's attacks could have gone on for so long, Groeschel added, "Well, you know, until recent years, people did not register in their minds that it was a crime."

The interview was published on Monday but was removed from the National Catholic Register's website by Thursday. It was replaced with a note from Jeanette De Melo, the Register's editor in chief, apologizing for what she called an "editorial mistake," saying the publication should have attempted to clarify or challenge his comments.

"Child sexual abuse is never excusable," she wrote.

The Archdiocese of New York said Groeschel's comments were "simply wrong" and could not go unchallenged, although it does not have direct authority over Groeschel, who retired from teaching in the archdiocese's seminary last year.

'SAID SOMETHING LIKE GRANDPA WOULD SAY'

Colleagues of Groeschel suggested on Thursday that he was recovering from a fall and was mentally frail.

The Rev. Glenn Sudano, a spokesman for the Franciscan Friars, likened him to an elderly relative.

"He said something like grandpa would say and it's like 'Grandpa, why would you say that?'" Sudano told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"Obviously we don't agree with what he said, obviously it's terribly disappointing that people are hurt or upset," Sudano said. "We feel very bad about it."

Sudano said he did not know if Groeschel would face any consequences for his remarks.

Barbara Blaine, president of Survivors Network for those Abused by Priests, called the remarks "callous."

"A teenager does not have the power to seduce anyone. The adult is in the position of power and authority," Blaine said. "He should be removed from speaking as a Catholic leader."

Archdiocese spokesman Joseph Zwilling said, "The harm that was done by these remarks was compounded by the assertion that the victim of abuse is responsible for the abuse, or somehow caused the abuse to occur.

"This is not only terribly wrong," he said in a statement, "it is also extremely painful for victims."

(AP) ? This was exactly what Rickie Fowler wanted to hear.

"I'd pick him," a voice called out behind the ninth green Thursday at the TPC Boston, causing Fowler to look over his shoulder and smile.

Too bad this pronouncement came from the caddie for Justin Rose, and not Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III, who now has the increasingly difficult decision of picking four players to fill out his American team.

The 99-man field in the Deutsche Bank Championship, which starts Friday, feels a lot smaller than that. This is the second event in the FedEx Cup playoffs as it moves closer to the Tour Championship and a shot at the $10 million bonus. But at least for the first few days, the chatter in a half-dozen players who face what amounts to the final audition before Love announces his picks Tuesday in New York.

Fowler is one of those players trying to make an impression. So is Hunter Mahan, who played two groups behind him in the pro-am. And right behind Mahan was Nick Watney, who wasn't even part of the Ryder Cup equation until he won The Barclays on Sunday. That made him No. 1 in the FedEx Cup standings, which made him happy. And it made Watney part of the Ryder Cup conversation, which made him ... well, he's not sure what to think.

Watney was such a long shot to make the Ryder Cup team a week ago that he hasn't been measured for a team uniform, and when Love hosted an informal dinner at the PGA Championship three weeks ago for potential Ryder Cup players, Watney didn't even get invited.

"For all I know, I'm not even in the conversation," Watney said. "I'm really not sure. All I can do is go and try to play my best. I know that's watered down and cliche, but it's really true. I'm not really shooting for any number or, 'If I finish in the top 10 I'll make it' because I'm just not sure. I guess I'll just to continue my momentum.

"And if I get that call, I could probably walk to Indy just as fast as fly because I'll be super, super excited."

Indianapolis, where the BMW Championship will be played next week, is the third stop in the playoffs. Getting to Crooked Stick is the goal for some three dozen players at the TPC Boston, because only the top 70 move on.

Among those on the bubble are Vijay Singh (No. 59), Pat Perez (No. 65), Sean O'Hair (No. 74) and Jason Day (No. 88).

Tiger Woods, whose injury-filled season a year ago kept him out of the playoffs, returns to the Deutsche Bank Championship. He won on the TPC Boston in 2006, the year before the FedEx Cup began. Woods fell to No. 3 in the standings because of a dismal weekend at Bethpage, and because players are grouped by their FedEx Cup seeding, he will play the opening two rounds with Watney and Brandt Snedeker, another Ryder Cup possibility.

Woods has talked to Love about the potential picks, and he has an idea what kind of player the captain is considering. But he's not saying, except for the idea that having too many guys from whom to choose is not the worst thing.

"It's nice that we have some depth, and we have some young talent out there to choose from, and we have some guys that are playing well, too, which is great," he said.

Woods pointed out that Paul Azinger came up with this model of waiting three weeks for the captain to make his picks, allowing players extra time to show their form.

"It can give guys an opportunity to play well in big events ? two playoff events ? but it also showcases guys who are hot, and that's the whole idea is to get guys that are hot," Woods said. "That's the thing that basically Davis and I have been talking about. And I'm sure we'll continue to talk."

It's also given some players time to break into a cold sweat.

Mahan looked to be on the team all year, especially after winning the Match Play Championship and the Houston Open, moving up to No. 4 in the world and making him the highest-ranked American. He has only had one top 10 since then, however, narrowly missed out on earning on the eight qualifying spots after the PGA Championship and didn't do himself any favors by missing the cut at The Barclays.

A small group of reporters was waiting on Mahan when he finished his pro-am on Thursday, and Mahan didn't need to hear a question to know what they wanted.

He also has a plan for the Deutsche Bank Championship.

"The last couple of weeks, I've tried not to think about it. I've tried to relax and play, and I don't feel that's me," he said. "I need to accept it and get excited about it. I do have a chance to make the team. I need to be a little more aggressive with it, relish the opportunity and not hide from it. It's there. It's going to take energy for me not to think about. Hey, I'd rather be in the mix for the Ryder Cup than not."

Steve Stricker and Jim Furyk are in the mix, though most indications are they are good bets to be picked. That would leave two spots for any combination of Fowler, Mahan, Watney, Snedeker, Dustin Johnson and perhaps someone who might win this week, such as Bo Van Pelt or even Bill Haas.

"Playing golf is all I can do," Fowler said. "I don't want the pick to be hard for Davis. ... I hope to play well and make the pick easier."

Fowler's three goals going into the year were to win on the PGA Tour for the first time, get to the Tour Championship for the first time and play in another Ryder Cup. He only has the first goal out of the way. He still controls whether he reaches the next goal.

The Ryder Cup?

That's wide open, making the next four days about more than another big tournament with an $8 million purse and a chance at a $10 million bonus.

Insight - Neuroscience in court: My brain made me do it

LONDON (Reuters) - He was once a respected pediatrician, loved by patients and their parents for over 30 years. Now Domenico Mattiello faces trial for pedophilia, accused of making sexual advances towards little girls in his care.

Scientific experts will argue in court that his damaged brain made him do it, and his lawyers will ask for leniency.

It's the latest example of how neuroscience - the science of the brain and how it works - is taking the stand and beginning to challenge society's notions of crime and punishment.

The issue has been thrown into the spotlight by new technologies, like structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET) scans and DNA analysis, that can help pinpoint the biological basis of mental disorders.

A series of recent studies has established that psychopathic rapists and murderers have distinct brain structures that show up when their heads are scanned using MRI.

And in the United States, two companies, one called No Lie MRI and another called Cephos Corp, are advertising lie-detection services using fMRI to lawyers and prosecutors.

CRIME AND PUNISHMENT

While structural MRI scans show the structure of a brain and can highlight differences between one brain and another, PET and fMRI scans can also show the brain in action, lighting up at particular points when the brain engages in certain tasks.

But the dazzling new technologies and detailed genetic data leave unanswered the issue of whether criminal courts are the right place to use this new information.

"The worry is that the law, or at least some judges, might be so overawed by the technology that they start essentially delegating the decision about guilt to a particular form of test," says Colin Blakemore, a professor of neuroscience at Oxford University.

The lawyers for American serial killer Brian Dugan, who was facing execution in Illinois after pleading guilty to raping and killing a 10-year-old girl, used scans of his brain activity to argue he had mental malfunctions and should be spared the death penalty. In the event, Illinois abolished capital punishment while he was on death row.

In a court in the Indian city of Mumbai, a woman was convicted of murder based only on circumstantial evidence and a so-called brain electrical oscillations signature profiling (BEOS) test, the results of which prosecutors said suggested she was guilty.

The days when mental capacity for crime is argued over by psychiatrists unaided by sophisticated machinery - such as Friday's verdict that Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik was sane when he killed 77 people - look numbered.

"All sorts of types of neuroscience evidence are being used for all sorts of types of claims," says Teneille Brown, a professor of law at the University of Utah. "The question is, is this technology really ready for prime time, or is it being abused?"

"ACQUIRED PAEDOPHILIA"

In Mattiello's case, the neuroscientific evidence will come in the form of a full psychiatric and biological analysis including an MRI brain scan that shows a roughly 4 centimeter tumor growing at the base of his brain.

This created pressure inside his skull and "altered his behavior", says Pietro Pietrini, a molecular geneticist and psychiatrist at Italy's University of Pisa who is compiling an expert report on the 65-year-old.

"His previous behavior was completely normal," Pietrini told Reuters. "He was a pediatrician for 30 something years and he saw tens of thousands of children and never had any problem. The question is why, at some point, did someone who has always behaved properly suddenly change so drastically?"

The doctor was arrested in Vicenza, northern Italy, more than a year ago and is undergoing cancer treatment after having the tumor removed. Pietrini is due to see him again next month to continue his assessment and see the effects of the treatment.

The case, which has yet go to court, is strikingly similar to another of "acquired pedophilia" dating back to 2002, in which a 40-year-old married American schoolteacher suddenly became obsessed with sex and began secretly to collect child pornography.

He was eventually removed from the family home for making sexual advances towards his step-daughter and convicted of pedophilia. But later medical examinations found he had an egg-sized tumor in a part of the brain involved in decision-making.

When the tumor was removed, the man recovered from his pedophilic tendencies and was able to return to his family.

Experts are generally agreed that conditions like psychopathy and pedophilia can't be "cured", but in this groundbreaking case it appeared that removing the tumor, and hence the pressure in the brain, may have re-established his ability to control impulses.

As in that case, Pietrini said he and colleague Giuseppe Sartori of Padua University believed Mattiello's tumor "may well have played a role in altering his behavior".

"This is what we will be arguing," Pietrini said. "But of course it will be for the judge to determine to what extent he believes this medical condition played a role."

Oxford's Blakemore, one of the world's leading thinkers in this field, says such cases are "startling".

"It makes one wonder about the notion of responsibility," he said in an interview.

IS "MY BRAIN MADE ME DO IT" A DEFENCE?

And when it comes to prison, should pedophiles, psychopaths and other violent criminals be punished less severely if their behavior can be blamed on biology? Is "my brain made me do it" a defense that warrants recognition with lighter sentences, or even no jail time at all?

"(It) raises the whole issue of what you think sentencing is for," says Blakemore. "Is it about punishment? Is it about retribution? Is it about remediation and rehabilitation? Is it about protecting society? Well, to some extent it's about all of those things."

Recent evidence - from both real and hypothetical cases - suggests judges are sympathetic to neurobiological evidence as mitigation.

A study published in the journal Science this month showed that criminal psychopaths in the United States whose lawyers provide biological evidence for their brain condition are more likely to be sentenced to shorter jail terms than those who are simply said to be psychopaths.

For the study, researchers at the University of Utah tweaked the real-life case of Stephen Mobley, a 39-year-old American who was sentenced to death in 1994 after robbing a Domino's pizza place in Georgia and shooting dead the restaurant's manager.

At his trial, Mobley's lawyer presented evidence in mitigation showing the accused had a variant of a gene called MAO-A that has been dubbed the "warrior" gene after scientists found it was linked to violent behavior.

AGGRESSIVE GENES

In the Science study, judges were given a hypothetical case loosely based on Mobley's, where the crime was a savage beating with a gun, rather than a fatal shooting.

All the judges were told the defendant was a psychopath, but only half were given expert testimony on the genetic and neurobiological causes of his psychopathy. Those who got the neuroscientific evidence were more likely to give a shorter sentence - generally about a year less, the study found.

Pietrini worked on a similar real-life case in Italy in 2009 - thought to be one of the first criminal cases in Europe to use this type of neuroscientific evidence.

It involved Abdelmalek Bayout, an Algerian living in Italy, who was tried and convicted for fatally stabbing a man who teased him in the street.

After conducting a series of tests on the Algerian, Pietrini and colleagues said they had found abnormalities in imaging scans of his brain, and in five genes that have been linked to violent behavior ? including MAO-A.

A 2002 study led by researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London linked low levels of MAO-A with aggressiveness and criminal behavior in boys who were raised in abusive environments.

Bayout's lawyers got his sentence reduced by arguing that this and other bad genes had affected his brain and were partly to blame for the attack.

WHERE WILL IT END?

Experts say it's almost inevitable that neuroscience and law will become yet more intertwined. After all, while neuroscience seeks to find out how the brain functions and affects behavior, the law's main concern is with regulating behavior.

Yet many are uneasy about the use in courts of law - and in matters of life and death - of basic science that is only just creeping out of the lab.

Observers such as Hank Greely, a professor of law at Stanford University, point out that no scientific peer-reviewed studies have been published demonstrating that BEOS - the brain test used in the Mumbai case - actually works.

Others stress that while genes like MAO-A have been associated with violence, there are also plenty of people with similar genotypes who don't go out and kill, rape or abuse.

"Neuroscience is being used by serious scientists in real labs, but the people trying to apply it in courts are not those same people," says Utah's Brown. "So they're taking something that looks very objective, that looks like gold standard science, but then morphing it into a forensic use it wasn't developed for.

"This isn't snake-oil science. It's real science. But it's being misapplied."

Seena Fazel, a clinical senior lecturer in forensic psychiatry at Oxford University, says he's uncomfortable with the long-term implications and wonders where it will end.

There are already known biological bases for many brain disorders criminals suffer from, including drug addiction, alcoholism and antisocial personality disorder, which is thought to affect up to half of all those in prison.

"If psychopathy reduces your sentence because it has a biological basis, why shouldn't these other more common conditions also result in reduced sentences? The problem here is where do we draw the line?"

NASA's Dawn spacecraft prepares for trek toward dwarf planet

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? NASA's Dawn spacecraft is on track to become the first probe to orbit and study two distant solar system destinations, to help scientists answer questions about the formation of our solar system. The spacecraft is scheduled to leave the giant asteroid Vesta on Sept. 4 PDT (Sept. 5 EDT) to start its two-and-a-half-year journey to the dwarf planet Ceres.

Dawn began its 3-billion-mile (5-billion kilometer) odyssey to explore the two most massive objects in the main asteroid belt in 2007. Dawn arrived at Vesta in July 2011 and will reach Ceres in early 2015. Dawn's targets represent two icons of the asteroid belt that have been witness to much of our solar system's history.

To make its escape from Vesta, the spacecraft will spiral away as gently as it arrived, using a special, hyper-efficient system called ion propulsion. Dawn's ion propulsion system uses electricity to ionize xenon to generate thrust. The 12-inch-wide ion thrusters provide less power than conventional engines, but can maintain thrust for months at a time.

"Thrust is engaged, and we are now climbing away from Vesta atop a blue-green pillar of xenon ions," said Marc Rayman, Dawn's chief engineer and mission director, at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "We are feeling somewhat wistful about concluding a fantastically productive and exciting exploration of Vesta, but now have our sights set on dwarf planet Ceres.

Dawn's orbit provided close-up views of Vesta, revealing unprecedented detail about the giant asteroid. The mission revealed that Vesta completely melted in the past, forming a layered body with an iron core. The spacecraft also revealed the scarring from titanic collisions Vesta suffered in its southern hemisphere, surviving not one but two colossal impacts in the last two billion years. Without Dawn, scientists would not have known about the dramatic troughs sculpted around Vesta, which are ripples from the two south polar impacts.

"We went to Vesta to fill in the blanks of our knowledge about the early history of our solar system," said Christopher Russell, Dawn's principal investigator, based at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). "Dawn has filled in those pages, and more, revealing to us how special Vesta is as a survivor from the earliest days of the solar system. We can now say with certainty that Vesta resembles a small planet more closely than a typical asteroid."

The mission to Vesta and Ceres is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., for the agency's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Dawn is a project of the directorate's Discovery Program, which is managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.

UCLA is responsible for the overall Dawn mission science. Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Va., designed and built the spacecraft. The German Aerospace Center, the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, the Italian Space Agency and the Italian National Astrophysical Institute are part of the mission's team. The California Institute of Technology in Pasadena manages JPL for NASA.

There never seems to be enough hours in the day to get everything done. Well, this year's laptop computers may be the answer to getting back a few of these valuable hours each week. A recent study showed that notebook computer users report an average of 10.8 hours each week of additional productivity over users of desktop computers. Those who travel frequently, reported almost 15 more, productive hours, weekly. Laptops increase productivity because they free the worker from network cables. Time once wasted commuting, waiting at airports or during those "can't sleep" hours at home, can now be a chance to stay in touch with customers, finish projects, check e-mail or share files. This year's lines of laptop computers can deliver most, if not more, of the power and benefits of desktop computer but in a portable package. The computers link effortlessly to wireless networks at the office, home and on the road.

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your mobile computing solution. In The Office In the office, mobile computing has powered cooperation by enabling employees to stay connected to the office network while literally moving their laptops from office to conference room and back, all while the laptop remains linked through a wireless network to all the needed files. The new freedom from Ethernet cables gives workers an opportunity to share ideas and test solutions easily without having to re-establish network connections. In some offices, the concept of mobile computing has taken on new meaning as users literally take their laptops into a series of meetings in different locations, without ever missing a keystroke. Always On The GoFor the business traveler, wireless access is critical to staying connected. Many hotels and airports, coffee shops, bookstores and other places provide "hot spots" that let wireless users access the internet and transfer large files quickly via high-bandwidth connections. For those who want even more, flexible access, the latest notebooks offer mobile broadband capabilities that let users connect to the Web using cellular networks from major wireless service providers. Home At home, notebook users have the freedom to tap into the Internet or their office network conveniently, using an inexpensive wireless network that can link through the home's broadband connection. That means workers can access the Internet, their network folders and check e-mail while sipping a cup of coffee on the front porch or while making dinner in the kitchen. These wireless networks also help users share a single printer without manually linking to the printer cable. Advanced notebooks/laptops permit a growing number of electronic components-PCs, cell phones, GPS systems and others-to be synchronized using Bluetooth technology. (See last week's article http://www.plaintechtalk.com/blog for more information on Bluetooth technology, an inexpensive wireless system designed for use at close range.) This permits easy data transfers between devices. Wireless networking is an inexpensive and effective way for small businesses and home offices to maximize productivity.

How To Design A Successful Home Improvement Project | Fotografi ...

Posted by oaugpe83 on Aug 28th, 2012 | Comments Off

If you are trying to add a light outdoors, try going with an outdoor motion detector light. If you install an outdoor motion detector light, it will only come on when there is motion outside. This will help with saving energy since your light will not be running all the time.

If you frequently read in bed, consider installing a wall-mounted swing-arm or flexible-neck lighting fixture in the bedroom. Unlike overhead lights or bedside lamps, these lights can be easily adjusted to provide just enough light for reading without keeping your bed mate awake with a harsh glow. This will also help you to prevent eye strain from reading in dim light.

When doing a DIY home improvement project, put safety first. Make sure you wear protective equipment such as a hard hat and goggles when needed. Use power tools (especially ones you are not familiar with) with extreme caution. Read the directions and ask for help when needed. Home improvement stores are a great resource of information.

Replace your old curtains with new ones. A faded set of curtains will take away from the look of the entire space. By eliminating them you will add a dramatic feel to your room without having to go through all of the work of painting the room. It is an affordable and easy way to get a new look.

Talk to neighbors and look for signs of new construction before moving into a new neighborhood. You don?t want to end up living across from the newest McMansion. Find out the chances of the neighborhood changing and what the trends are before buying. The gorgeous hill view from the kitchen might become a new subdivision before you know it.

Start your kitchen cabinet install with the top cabinets. It will make it easier for you to get nice and close to the wall so you do not have to stretch to reach the wall to put the screws into place. You should also start with the corner cabinet and line the rest of them up to that one; but be sure to use a level.

Never agree to a discount from a contractor for not bothering with paperwork. Without a contract you are completely out of luck if the contractor doesn?t fulfill his obligations and do the work to the quality that you expected.

Exterior window shutters are one the easiest and most cost-effective ways to improve your home?s appearance. If you have carpentry skills, it is very possible to make custom shutters that can be stained or painted to accent your home?s color. For the less handy, prefabricated wood, shutters are attainable at all home-improvement stores and come ready to paint or stain. Shutters are also available in lightweight, recycled plastic in a variety of colors that never need painting.

An easy home improvement idea that will help you to conserving energy is to install one or many motion detectors on the exterior of your home. Motion sensors in addition to lighting timers keep the areas you want lit at night but also save you money on your electric bill.

If you do not have a friend or family member on hand to help you out with what you are doing, it is normally very easy to find cheap labor for assistance. If you live near an university, you can put up an ad asking for a student to help you out.

If you are stuck with a boring steel front door, and can?t afford a new one, try painting it an interesting color, or choose a paint with special effects. You could also apply some kind of faux-finish to make it appear more interesting and expensive!

When taking out a home improvement loan consider the costs of what you are going to do within your home. If you can cut costs and shop around for a better price on materials or even do the job yourself instead of hiring a contractor, you will save yourself some money and interest!

If one has a wooden deck, porch, gazebo, railing, or any other wooden structure, such as a playground set, putting a wood finish on it can be a good weekend project. It will seal the wood from the elements and increase the life span of the structure. The finished product will last much longer than the time it took to accomplish.

If you are a handy person and can understand plans, consider doing some home improvement jobs yourself. Small and simple projects can improve the overall look of your home. By doing it yourself, you save money and avoid the aggravation of researching a contractor for minor jobs. You will feel more confident and much prouder of your home.

Home improvement can also be called a honey do list. If you have one of these lists, make sure you work diligently to complete each project on the list. The list may seem never-ending, but the jobs will ultimately make your house a better, safer place to live.

Now that you have learned some helpful tips and information about home improvement, you are ready to get out your tools and take on the challenge of improving your home. Michigan RB Toussaint pleads guilty to lesser DUI

SALINE, Mich. (AP) ? Michigan running back Fitzgerald Toussaint pleaded guilty Tuesday to drunken driving while his availability for Saturday night's showdown with No. 2 Alabama remained unknown.

Toussaint made a brief appearance in Washtenaw County District Court, pleading guilty to operating a vehicle while visibly impaired after being charged with the more serious operating while intoxicated. He faces up to 93 days in jail when he is sentenced Oct. 23, just after Michigan hosts Michigan State and prior to its game at Nebraska.

Toussaint didn't comment to the media and his attorney, Douglas Lewis, told reporters to "take a hike" outside the courtroom.

Coach Brady Hoke hasn't said whether Toussaint will play for the eighth-ranked Wolverines against defending champion Alabama on Saturday night in Arlington, Texas. Hoke isn't expected to address Toussaint's status for the opener any sooner than Wednesday when he meets with the media.

Toussaint, who ran for more than 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns last season as a sophomore, was suspended after his arrest last month. Hoke reinstated him to participate in the second week of preseason practice.

Toussaint was listed as the starter on this week's depth chart. If he sits for the opener, returning running backs Thomas Rawls, Vincent Smith, Justice Hayes along with newcomers Dennis Norfleet and Drake Johnson all could see action against the Crimson Tide.

"Whenever you're in this position, you've got to make decisions that are best for the program," Hoke said. "That doesn't mean for one specific team. That means for the program. That means for the identity and the character of the program that you represent.

"Are they easy decisions? No. Are they decisions you want to make because you love the kids? No. But you have to make them."

Crimson Tide linebacker Nico Johnson said he and his teammates are getting ready for anyone lined up behind or alongside quarterback Denard Robinson in the backfield.

"We're prepared for (Toussaint) to play, we're prepared for him not to play," Johnson said. "We've got a game plan and that's what we're going to stick to."

The 22-year-old Toussaint acknowledged in court that he was stopped for running a red light on July 21 after drinking an unknown quantity of brandy where he lives. Police said he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.12 percent, above the state limit of 0.08.

He arrived in a court several miles south of Michigan Stadium ? wearing tan pants and a plaid, button-down shirt ? with his attorney and associate athletic director Greg Harden.

Toussaint stood expressionless behind a lectern in court while a newspaper's camera clicked and a TV station's camera filmed him during a hearing that lasted nearly 5 minutes about jurisdiction for the case. Toussaint's attorney then motioned for his client to go toward the door and they returned several minutes to finalize the plea deal.

Hoke said Monday that what happened with Toussaint in court wouldn't affect his status with the team. He told reporters that Toussaint and defensive end Frank Clark, who is accused of taking a laptop from a dorm room, are not done paying consequences while he decides whether their team-issued punishment will include missing at least the Alabama game.

"I'm comfortable with what I want to do, very comfortable with that," Hoke said. "Talking to all of you guys about it, no, that's not comfortable, because it's talking about two kids who are sons to us and made bad decisions."

Poll: Obama vulnerable on economy, Romney weak on voter approval

Obama faces an electorate that sees the US economy in bleak terms, but he still outperforms Mitt Romney on voter favorability and in swing states, says a poll by the conservative group Resurgent Republic, released at the GOP convention.

President Obama faces an electorate with a bleak assessment of the American economy and the nation?s standing overall, according to polling released Tuesday by the conservative group Resurgent Republic, yet voters are evenly divided on their approval of Mr. Obama, who still leads his GOP rival, Mitt Romney, in favorability and is ahead by a nose in swing states.

?If there?s one candidate who has a problem being outside the mainstream of American voters, it?s not Mitt Romney,? said Whit Ayres, the Republican pollster who ran the survey. ?It?s Barack Obama.?

A majority of American voters (54 percent) say the country isn?t moving ?forward,? Mr. Obama?s campaign slogan, and nearly 7 in 10 believe the nation is in a recession, according to the poll, given to reporters at a Resurgent Republic briefing at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.

The US economy is not in a recession (defined as negative growth in quarterly gross domestic product, among other measures), and has not been since June 2009.

Nearly 6 in 10 Americans say the federal government?s financial situation is worse today than when Obama took office in 2009, with about 5 in 10 saying the government?s ability to solve problems and [help???] the American economy is probably worse than in 2009. The only measure on which Americans say the situation is better today than three years ago is on safety from terrorists: 39 percent say the nation?s security standing has improved versus 20 percent who say it has declined.

Still, the poll included favorable signs for the president.

First, while Obama?s approval/disapproval rating is almost even at 48/49 percent, he still trumps Mr. Romney?s rating of 44 percent approval to 50 percent disapproval.

Second, Obama has a three-point edge among voters in swing states (48 percent to 45 percent). While a slim majority of likely voters disapprove of Obama?s handling of the economy (51 percent disapproval versus 45 percent approval), Obama does better in battleground states, where he registers 49 percent approval and 48 percent disapproval on the economy.

Romney has a wider advantage with independent voters, leading 45 percent to Obama's 37 percent. Nationwide, Obama leads Romney 46 percent to 45 percent among likely voters, well within the margin of error.

The poll also gives Republicans hope of fending off traditional Democratic attacks on Medicare, a field many Democrats saw as promising after Romney selected Rep. Paul Ryan (R) of Wisconsin as his running mate. Representative Ryan, as chairman of the House Budget Committee, has championed changes to Medicare.

When offered representations of the Democratic and Republican messages on Medicare, 40 percent preferred the conservative argument and 41 percent preferred the liberal message. Independents narrowly favored the GOP formulation, 39 percent to 37 percent.

The poll sampled 1,000 likely voters, and almost half of those were from a dozen battleground states. Like many other national polls, the Resurgent Republic poll was made up of 37 Democrats and 30 percent Republicans. The 37 percent to 30 percent level represents the ?best-case scenario for Democrats,? because it's based on 2008 turnout, not previous years when voter turnout was not so heavily Democratic.

The poll has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points overall; in battleground states, the margin was 4.7.

How You Can Reduce Your Grocery Bill With A Home ... - Gardening

Gardening is a relaxing hobby, and it does not cost a lot of money. Gardening is the perfect way to spend family time or for friends to get together. If you have children that help you in the garden, you will notice their fascination with the way that the seeds will grow into vegetables and flowers. It is also a great lesson in life; it can really help you to appreciate nature and the outdoors. This article will make it simpler for you to love gardening, so that you may even have others help you.

Make use of root cuttings to create many new plants. Remember that the dormant cold season is the best time to snip those roots. Take off the biggest roots with a sharp blade. Separate the roots into cuts of about 2 inches each. Place the cuttings on top of a tray that has been covered with peat and some type of grit. Place a light layer of the grit and peat mixture on top of it. Store the seed tray in a cool area, and in approximately one month, your new seedlings will have started to sprout. Plant them individually in little pots until they?re ready to be placed outside.

Protect the soil around your vegetable plants with an inch or two of organic mulch. The mulch will add beneficial moisture to your soil. It also helps prevent weeds from growing. You?ll find this is a time saver since you won?t have to pull them later.

When mowing your lawn do not cut it as short as possible. If you let your grass grow, the roots will go deeper and make your lawn more resistant to dryness. Short grass is more prone to getting dried out and turning brown.

Identify a plant that will be the most prominent object of the landscape. Any great garden design involves using a focal point to grab someone?s attention and keep it there. In most cases, an original plant makes a good focal point.

An easy, inexpensive way to give them nutrients is to pour the leftover water from your steamed vegetables into the soil. Tea and coffee grounds can be used to add acidity to your soil for plants like gardenias and rhododendrons. Chamomile tea can be used as an effective fungicide for potted plants.

Large plants should be planted in autumn. Trees, for example, need to be planted during this time of year so that their roots can grow and develop properly. Roots grow stronger around this time of year, because the ground is a lot warmer than the air, and plants also do not have to support the growth of leaves. Plants can devote more of their energy to strengthening their root system.

Seeds should be soaked in a dark area overnight. Place some seeds into a small container, then fill it with water until it is almost to the top. This will keep your seeds hydrated and give you a little head start with your growing. The seeds will be better able to survive and grow up.

Some houseplants may require some humidity. Put several types of plants into one large pot to generate humidity. You can also put one plant in a large pot. Just pack the pot with stones so that the plant has little room to move and retains water. The humidity for your houseplants can be increased by a daily mist of water.

Dwarf fruit trees are the perfect choice for a small sized garden. Many areas only allow for small gardens, and that is where dwarf fruit trees fit in best. Dwarf fruit trees yield fruits about three or five years after they are planted, but the fruit is fully sized. Dormant trees should be planted in the beginning of spring, and be watered well until they are thriving.

Always have a plan for the garden prior to the start of planting it. This helps you remember where each plant was planted before they begin to sprout. A good plan can also help you to place each plant in the area that is most beneficial to them.

The approach of fall means you need to start planting autumn goodies. Clay pots are boring, so replace those ordinary lettuce and kale pots with pumpkins. Use some Wilt-Pruf to prevent your pumpkin from decomposing and then you can put your plants right inside. Once you?ve done this, you can plant.

Be an ecological friendly gardener and use rainwater for your plants. Using a specialized barrel, or any other container that works to collect rainwater, saves money on your monthly water bill, and makes good use of natural resources. This will help you save your money and keep an all natural garden.

Get a slug-proof variety of perennials. These mollusks are capable of consuming an entire garden full of flowers in a single night. These pests are especially attracted to tender sprouts and to delicate, soft leaves. Some varieties of perennials are not preferred by snails and slugs, particularly perennials that have hairy, tough leaves or a taste that isn?t appetizing. Consider planting these varieties of perennials to discourage slugs and snails from eating your flowers. Euphorbia and achillea are examples of slug-proof perennials.

As these tips show, gardening can be both fun as a solitary hobby or as a family project. Use the helpful advice in this article to share your love for gardening with the ones you love, or enjoy doing it by yourself.

How You Can Pick Out The Ideal Storm ... - Home Improvements

by tradesman on 26/08/12 at 5:41 pm

When people do not want the expense of having a complete set of replacement windows installed they will often have storm windows fitted instead. These windows can be fitted over an existing window either internally or externally. They are generally made from glass or plexi glass with a wooden or vinyl frame. They have become very popular in recent times for a number of reasons.

You can install quality storm windows at a fraction of the cost your existing windows probably cost you in energy bills over time. Replacing your existing windows with these can not only save you money on your utilities but also save your home from damage as well. Leaky windows allow rain to seep into cracks and eventually can produce serious structure damage. There is also the possibility of mildew growing inside the walls. Eliminate those risks with these great replacements windows.

One important consideration when installing them is to not caulk the bottom of the Larson triple track storm windows. You must allow any moisture to find a path out. Caulking the bottom shut only causes other problems. The water build-up can freeze in the winter and could actually crack the windows.

You may ask yourself why someone would use storm windows instead of the newer vinyl windows everyone is installing. One reason is simply because some structures can?t, or shouldn?t, use vinyl windows. They aren?t designed for them. This is especially true with historical homes. The entire value of your home would actually plummet because of the new windows. Using them instead will add durability and insulation without changing the main structure. This should ensure your home retains the historical value it was meant to have.

Aluminum may be costly but it is very good for preventing from drafts and allows the transfer of heat more readily than the other materials. Another option is vinyl; vinyl can result in cracks or discoloration in sun exposure. You can choose material according to your requirements and weather condition because all of them have merits and demerits.

To take advantage of it move both glass panes to the bottom of the window and the half-screen to the top. Two-track slider are two-track windows that open horizontally instead of vertically. Two-track sliders are usually used with slider windows. As you shop for any home improvement project remember all products need to be installed properly.

Egypt reopens Rafah crossing with Gaza: sources

ISMAILIA, EGYPT/GAZA (Reuters) - Egypt reopened the Rafah border crossing with Gaza on Saturday, a lifeline for Gazans which had been closed for much of the month since an August 5 attack on Egyptian guards, Palestinian and Egyptian security sources said.

The move signals an advance in relations between Egypt's new government lead by President Mohammed Mursi and Gaza's Islamist rulers Hamas, which had deteriorated since the attack in which gunmen killed 16 Egyptian soldiers on the Israeli border.

"The Egyptian side has informed us that the Rafah crossing would open all days of the week, without more details," said Ehab Al-Ghsain, spokesman for the interior ministry in Gaza.

The opening of the crossing was confirmed by an Egyptian security source.

Shortly after the attack, Egypt closed the Rafah crossing and moved to seal myriad smuggling tunnels with Gaza on suspicion they might have been used by militants who shot dead the soldiers before storming an Israeli border crossing near Gaza. The attackers were killed by Israeli fire.

The Rafah crossing normally sees some 800 people a day leave for Egypt and beyond, and is the only window on the world for the vast majority of Gazans.

Egypt later said it would open the crossing temporarily, but just for three days, mainly to permit travel for humanitarian purposes such as Palestinians seeking medical care abroad.

Hamas has ruled out suggestions that Palestinian gunmen took part in the Sinai killings and has criticised Cairo for imposing "collective punishment" on the impoverished Mediterranean coastal enclave by sealing the border.

Hamas hoped the election of the Muslim Brotherhood's Mursi would usher in an era of strong ties between Gaza and Cairo, but that has yet to materialise because of strategic considerations involving Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel and related military aid from the United States.

Leave a comment - Education of Business Online from NCSU

The prime purpose of any Internet marketing strategy is to attract anyone who is interested in what your site, sales page, blog or forum offers. This primarily revolves around information, a service, or a product (yours, affiliate product or both), and preferably some combination of the three. This is your primary purpose in attracting targeted traffic.

Your second objective is the conversion of this traffic into making a purchase. Although this seems obvious, all too many people get sidetracked from their marketing objectives.

Make this your mantra as an online home marketing entrepreneur.

Targeted Traffic %2B Conversions = Sales

If you always keep this simple formula as your focus, you will be better able to focus more specifically on your online internet marketing endeavors. As a result of this focus you can achieve your objective in attracting targeted traffic to your online business. More importantly, this focused traffic will result in more conversions and sales.

There are 7 essential rules which are not only the principals of affiliate internet marketing, but all other forms of online marketing. If you follow these rules closely, you avoid not only wasting a lot of your time, but also on money wasting gimmicks along the way, especially if you are new to the game of internet home business

Here they are. Follow them wisely.

1. Marketing Involves a Certain Degree of Hazard

Internet marketing of your service, your product, or an affiliate product involves trying out a marketing strategy consisting of something that has just come out onto the market or in mimicking an existing online strategy. Simply put, you must be prepared that there will always be a possibility that the strategy you use either doesn?t work very well or doesn?t work at all. It happens to everyone.

Yes, it does seem like the internet marketing strategies we employ are not all that dissimilar from trying our luck in a casino.

However, there is much we can do to keep the risk at a minimal, especially if we are prepared to do what it takes to turn the risk into our advantage. We need to know and apply some of the basic principals that e especially need for internet marketing. These basic skills entail learning how pay per click works, writing good ads because we took the time to properly research keywords, and by clearly identifying just what exactly what our targeted market is looking for when they are searching, and where they are doing the searching.

2. Don?t Jump into Your Campaign Feet First.

Test the marketing waters of your online advertising campaign by starting out small. This reduces your capital output and saves you a lot of time from wasting yourself on a fruitless internet marketing plan. And, if your test shows results work, you can quickly build on your campaign and monetize through the resulting sales. This is how you succeed.

3. Consistency is Essential

You cannot succeed if you apply yourself in fits and starts. Those who succeed make a point to accomplish something everyday. They do not stop to take breaks or mope around. They are constantly tinkering with existing marketing strategies, building on ones that show promise or trying out new ones. This is really the difference between success and failure.

Your short range plan should include your determination to accomplish at least 5 things or objectives to complete the following day. It could trying a new add, writing an article, contributing to one more forums or blogs, or making links for example. Think of a snowball being gently nudged downhill.

By writing out these objectives the day before, your mind will also be subconsciously working on them as well so you will be inclined to be more creative when you work on the tasks you set out the day before. This is a very powerful process. Try to do this, one day at a time, until it becomes a daily habit.

4. Watch Your Cash.

Take your time in deciding what you want to spend on a monthly basis. Keep you outlay small as you learn and grow. Ask yourself whether the expense has met your goals for that cash outlay.

Buy what you can afford, and don?t buy anything that looks too good to be true. No matter how much there is on internet marketing gimmicks, research each product you are thinking of buying carefully. Always check out the refund polices.

5. Use Multiple Online Marketing Strategies.

The possibilities where you can now advertise affiliate marketing products or services covers many different possible sources and venues from which to drive traffic, conversions and sales. Sites like Facebook, Squidoo, Digg It, and venues like Ad Sense, PPC, article sites, blogs and forums, newsletters, email marketing are just some of the most basic viral internet marketing strategies available.

Use as many of these online internet marketing venues as possible to increase the possibility of your success. Some of these will work well for you and some may not. It?s up to you and your efforts to find which does and which doesn?t work. It only takes one successful marketing campaign to make those sales!

6. Be an Effective Copywriter.

If you are an internet marketer then any ad you write, whether it is a 2 line Pay Per Click Ad, a blog post, or an e-book, is about being able to write good, effective copy. It is vital that you take the time to learn this skill well. There?s a ton of information available but please keep in mind it is an essential skill to master.

Clearly, the most important aspect of this skill is to learn how to write a powerful and effective keyword rich, headlines to prompt your targeted customer to click to your site, If you aren?t grabbing a potential visitor?s interest right away, you?re losing out big time.

7. Always Track Your Internet Marketing Campaigns.

Obviously the most successful comes to naught if you discover you are having success with one or more campaigns but can?t tell which of the ones you are using are working. A successful affiliate marketer or service provider has to be able to track what is going on with each marketing campaign to learn the results.

If one isn?t working that well, you can re-examine your online strategy to find out through trial and error what is going to drive visitors to your home business, site or page. Many of these tracking systems can be tested for free as a feature of many of the advertising venues

There is one particular strategy that works called split testing. This can also be done for free, and is a very profitable marketing technique. Basically split testing entails making minor changes to a headline, an ad words ad or a landing page, and by testing it with your current version of the ad copy your are using. A simple twig can create incredible returns.

The important lesson with any kind of internet marketing is be proactive, write well, keep it small and test through tracking the online advertising campaign. Only those who hesitate or do nothing will fail.

'Project Runway' designer slams plus-size client

Lifetime

Ven's bad attitude and constant complaints brought his client-model Terri to tears.

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

Those wondering if "Project Runway" could possibly pack even bigger drama after two designers walked off the show this season got their answer Thursday night. It absolutely can -- and then some.

After all, the designers who ditched their big opportunities hurt only themselves. But on the latest episode of the fashion face-off, Ven Budhu, the show's newest villain, upped the drama considerably by actually hurting his client/model.

It all started when Ven and his fellow designers were presented with this season's twist on the now-usual "Runway" real-size challenge, wherein the contestants were asked to create makeover-worthy fashions for regular folks rather than models. Most of the competitors found the task exciting and looked forward to transforming their client-models. But not Ven.

No, Ven felt he was the victim of cruel fate thanks to his model's plus-size proportions. Terri happened to be a size 14 -- which is a fashion crime as far as Ven (who's well beyond the male equivalent of a 14) is concerned.

"My client doesn't really have a shape," he complained to Tim Gunn. "She's definitely not fashion forward. She doesn't have any sense of style whatsoever."

But make no mistake -- Ven didn't keep his unkind comments about his "nightmare" client strictly to Tim. He let them fly right in front of her as he whined about accessories that were too small for her and how difficult she was to design for. ?

"He made her cry!" Fabio Costa said of the situation that clearly frustrated all of the designers. "It's really sad that you have the power to make someone feel bad about themselves and you use that deliberately."

In the end, Ven still saw himself as the victim.

"When people see this episode they're going to feel that it's unfair (to me)," he said in an online-only clip. As for his client? "No one forced her to go on the show. She agreed to it."

Then again, no one forced Ven to take part in a fashion competition with a history of similar challenges. Besides according to mentor Tim, this particular challenge shouldn't have been too difficult for a "motivated designer" anyway.

"By the way, a size 14 is just on the cusp of plus size. And a motivated designer can make a size 28 look fabulous," he told his Twitter followers on Friday. "Think of the opera divas!"
